This sermon explores the profound, sacrificial, and unconditional love of Jesus, as exemplified in His care for His mother and His disciple.

Introduction

Good morning, church family. As we gather here today under the grace of our Lord, our hearts beat in unison with the rhythm of His love. It is a love that is ceaseless, a love that is unending, a love that is as vast as the universe and as intimate as a whispered prayer. Today, we're going to look closely at this love as revealed in the Gospel of John, Chapter 19, verses 26 and 27.

Let's read together, "When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, 'Woman, here is your son,' and to the disciple, 'Here is your mother.' From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.'"

This passage, my friends, paints a picture of love in its purest form. The love of a mother, the love of a son, and the love of our Savior. It's a love that is sacrificial, a love that is profound, a love that is unconditional. It is a love that we, as believers, are called to emulate in our daily lives.

We're going to be looking at three main points today. First, we'll be seeing the manifestation of Mary's maternal love. Second, we'll be considering the magnitude of Jesus' sacrificial love. And third, we're going to be reflecting on the message of unconditional love in John 19:26-27.

As we prepare to engage with these truths, let's remember the words of the great preacher Charles Spurgeon, who once said, "You cannot preach conviction of sin unless you have suffered it. You cannot preach repentance unless you have practiced it. You cannot preach faith unless you have exercised it. True preaching is artesian; it wells up from the great depths of the soul. If Christ has not made a well within us, there will be no outflow from us."

Let us pray. Heavenly Father, we come before you today with open hearts and open minds. We ask that you guide our understanding as we examine Your Word. Help us to grasp the depth of Your love as revealed in these verses. May the truths we discover today transform our lives and draw us closer to You. We ask this in the name of Jesus, our Savior, who loved us so much He gave His life for us. Amen.

Manifestation of Mary's Maternal Love

In the Gospel of John, we find Mary at the foot of the cross, a place no mother would ever want to be. Yet, there she was, standing by her son in His most agonizing moments. This scene is a vivid illustration of the depth and strength of a mother's love. Mary's presence at the cross was not a duty, it was a testament of her unwavering love for her son.

Mary's love for Jesus was not just the typical love of a mother for her child. It was a love that had been tested and tried from the very beginning. From the moment the angel Gabriel announced to her that she would bear the Son of God, Mary's life was filled with moments of joy, wonder, fear, and sorrow. Yet, through it all, her love for Jesus remained steadfast and unwavering.

Mary's love for Jesus was also a sacrificial love. She was willing to endure the pain of watching her son suffer on the cross because she loved Him. She was willing to stand by Him in His darkest hour, even when it meant enduring her own heartbreak. This sacrificial love is a powerful example for us. It challenges us to love others not just when it's easy or convenient, but when it's hard and painful.

It was also a love that trusted in God's plan. Even in the midst of her sorrow and pain, Mary trusted in God. She believed that God was in control and that He had a purpose for everything that was happening. This trust in God's plan is a crucial aspect of love. It means believing that God is working all things together for good, even when we can't see it.

Mary's love for Jesus was also a love that was willing to let go. When Jesus told her, "Woman, here is your son," He was not just referring to John, the disciple standing next to her. He was also referring to Himself. Jesus was telling Mary that she needed to let go of Him as her son and accept Him as her Savior. This act of letting go is one of the hardest aspects of love. It requires us to surrender our own desires and plans and trust in the plans of the one we love.

Transition. Mary's love for Jesus is a powerful example of the kind of love we are called to have as believers. It is a love that is steadfast, sacrificial, trusting, and willing to let go. It is a love that reflects the love of our Savior, a love that is as vast as the universe and as intimate as a whispered prayer. As we reflect on Mary's love for Jesus, let's ask God to help us love others with the same kind of love.
