TITLE: Why wicked men belong in hell

SCRIPTURE: Psalms 9:17 "The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God."

PROPOSITION: to use this text and others to show why wicked men belong in hell and also to show why many are not in hell now. and also to show that wicked men can be converted to Christ and be delivered from going down into hell, if they will but turn from their wickedness and receive Gods free gift of salvation that is in Christ alone.

1.) Why wicked men belong in hell.

A. because the law of God is against them, every transgression creates a wider and deeper chasm between a sinner and an infinitely holy God, and that chasm represents a broken law.

Romans 2:21-22 "Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal? Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege?"

Isaiah 59:2 "But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear."

B. because Gods word which cannot be broken has promised them that "their damnation shall not slumber". if wicked men could escape judgment and hell it would mean that God put no value on his word, but God has stated "he that believeth not shall be damned".

Psalms 138:2 "...for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name."

C. Because it is only fitting that a king should subdue his enemies, and that all stubborn rebels within his Dominion be incarcerated and punished. Christ is the great King of kings and Lord of lords and it is only proper that he should spoil his enemies and make a show of them openly.

Deuteronomy 7:10 "And repayeth them that hate him to their face, to destroy them: he will not be slack to him that hateth him, he will repay him to his face."

D. Because what gasoline is to fire in this world, sin is to hell fire in the world to come. hells furnace and sin have kissed each other and said their vows, they are married eternally and their embrace shall never end, "our God is a consuming fire".

Isaiah 9:18-19 "For wickedness burneth as the fire: it shall devour the briers and thorns, and shall kindle in the thickets of the forest, and they shall mount up like the lifting up of smoke. Through the wrath of the LORD of hosts is the land darkened, and the people shall be as the fuel of the fire: no man shall spare his brother."

E. Because it would be contrary to the benevolence of God to force wicked men into heaven. wicked men have hated and rejected God and it is only suitable that they who have chosen to live in darkness should go into outer darkness. those who have rejected God should know what it is to be rejected by God.

Matthew 25:41 "Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:"

F. Because it would not be fitting for Christ to suffer such horrible agony to satisfy the justice of God at Calvary and for wicked men who died impenitently not to suffer to the same degree in the torments of hell.

what Christ suffered for them they must suffer because the only substitutionary payment was rejected, spit upon and ignored.

Acts 7:51 "Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye."

G. Because Gods moral government has its foundation in justice and truth, and the honor of his majesty is at stake. God must punish the wicked eternally or he would not be true to himself or to the honor of his moral government and his majesty, and because of this the wicked belong in hell where they can suffer just torments.

Romans 3:5-6 "But if our unrighteousness commend the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unrighteous who taketh vengeance? (I speak as a man) God forbid: for then how shall God judge the world?"

H. Because wicked men are on a direct road to hell.

If you choose a highway that would lead you to a certain destination and you did not arrived at your destination you would be disappointed. Wicked men should not be disappointed when they lift "up their eyes being in torments". The highway that leads to hell has many road signs that give clear indication that this is the way to destruction, in contradistinction the road to life is the way of holiness. Matthew 7:13-14 "Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it."
