Summary: Meeting between Mary and Elizabeth

Why me?

Luke 1: 39 – 45

Intro: Burl Ives – “Have A Holly, Jolly Christmas” It’s the best time of the year. I don’t know if there’ll be snow, but have a cup of cheer. Have a holly, jolly Christmas; and when you walk down the street say hello to friends you know and everyone you meet. Oh ho, the mistletoe hung where you can see; somebody waits for you; kiss her once for me. Have a holly jolly Christmas and in case you didn’t hear, oh by golly have a holly jolly Christmas this year.

1 What is a “Holly, jolly Christmas?” What does it look like?

A Perhaps you believe that if you combine a large number of family and friends coupled with the right gifts and right meal it will happen.

B What if things haven’t been great this year? What if you don’t have a large group of people around you. Can you still have a holly, jolly Christmas?

II VSS. 39 – 40 “At that time, Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth.”

A Why did Mary go? She wasn’t told to do so. It was about an 80 mile journey.

B Why? For confirmation --- for companionship with someone who would understand --- for the wisdom of her older relative --- for courage --- to share the joy?

III VS. 43 ”But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?”

A For me, this verse is the most important in this passage because I often ask God the same question. “But why am I so favored?”

B Perhaps you have asked yourself that same question. “Why me?”

Concl: God’s word speaks to each of us at this time of year. It speaks of the good news that came long ago in Christ Jesus. That good news comes to all of us! We have joy at this time of year not because of the trimmings, lights, presents or even the number of family and friends who gather together. We have joy because the Savior promised in the Old Testament, and to Mary and Elizabeth, was born, lived, died and rose again for us! Therefore, we should turn from the “why me attitude” we so often embrace and rejoice in the love of God found in Christ Jesus.
