Plan for: Thanksgiving | Advent | Christmas
Explore the depth of Isaiah 53:7, emphasizing Jesus Christ's silent courage, His profound revelation, and His role as the ultimate Bridegroom.
Good morning, church family. Today, we're diving deep into the heart of Isaiah 53:7, a verse that speaks vividly about our Lord Jesus Christ, His steadfast silence before His accusers, the profound significance of His revelation, and the beautiful parallels between Jesus and the bridegroom.
As we do so, I want to share a quote from Thomas Brooks. He once said, "We trust as we love, and where we love. If we love Christ much, surely we shall trust him much." Isn't that just the profound truth we all need to hear?
Let's take a moment to look at our verse for today:
"He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth."
Oh, the richness of this verse, the depth of its revelation, and the weight of its implications. It points to the silent courage of our Savior, the immense revelation He carried, and His role as the ultimate Bridegroom. It's a lot to unpack, and I pray that the Holy Spirit will guide us in understanding today.
Let's pray,
Heavenly Father, we thank you for this beautiful day and the opportunity to gather together in Your name. As we dive into Your word, we ask for Your Holy Spirit to guide us in understanding and applying it to our lives. Open our hearts to the deep truths hidden in these verses, and help us to see Your Son, Jesus, in a new light. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Now, let's dive into the Word together.
As we delve into the first point of our sermon, the refusal of Jesus to speak, we find ourselves in the midst of a profound revelation. This singular act, as described in Isaiah 53:7, is not merely a historical event but a testament to the character of our Savior and a model for our own conduct in times of adversity.
His divine nature and unwavering commitment to the will of God: In His silence, Jesus demonstrated a profound trust in God's plan, a trust so complete that He did not feel the need to defend Himself or to justify His actions. This is a powerful lesson for us, as we often feel the need to defend ourselves when we are accused or misunderstood. Yet, Jesus shows us that our trust in God should be so complete that we can remain silent, confident in the knowledge that God is in control and that His will is being done.
His humility: Despite being the Son of God, He did not use His divine authority to silence His accusers or to assert His innocence. Instead, He humbly submitted to the will of God, accepting the suffering and humiliation that came with it. This humility is a stark contrast to the pride and self-righteousness that often characterizes our own responses to criticism and adversity. It challenges us to cultivate a spirit of humility, recognizing that our own understanding and abilities are limited and that we must rely on God's wisdom and strength.
His love for us: He willingly endured the pain and humiliation of the cross, refusing to speak out in His own defense, because of His love for us. His silence is a testament to the depth of His love, a love so great that He was willing to sacrifice Himself for our sake. This is a love that we are called to emulate in our own lives, a love that is willing to endure suffering and sacrifice for the sake of others.
His obedience to God: Despite the pain and suffering He was facing, He remained obedient to God's will, refusing to speak out in His own defense or to question God's plan. This obedience is a model for us, as we are often tempted to question God's plan or to assert our own will in the face of adversity. Yet, Jesus shows us that true obedience involves surrendering our own desires and trusting in God's plan, even when it involves suffering and sacrifice.
Pastor, here would be a good place to share a personal story about what Jesus’ silence means to you. What are some examples in which you have to do something similar?
