Summary: God exists, He made everything in 6 literal days, and he utilized patterns to do so. He utilized patterns because He delights in them. Our life is happier and easier if we embrace His patterns in our daily life.

Why did God Take 6 Days to Make Everything?

Gen. 1:1, 2:1-3

1. God Made _Everything_ (1:1)

A. God Exists, and it’s _Clear_.

Honestly, it’s rather obvious.

“It is so obvious, so salient, so clear that God exists, that the Bible assumes it in Genesis 1:1. To deny this basic tenet of life is to deny reality, sense, wisdom, and to embrace folly and rebellion” Psalm 14:1 “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.’ They are corrupt…”

Romans 1:19-20 states that God's invisible qualities, such as His eternal power and divine nature, are “clearly seen” through the things that have been made.

B. God is the Creator of Everything.

• "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands." This quote, from Psalm 19:1

• God created the universe “Ex Nihilo,” or “from nothing.”

Application:

Because God created everything, it is obvious that He exists. Whether something is “obvious” or not is ultimately a judgement call. According to the Scriptures, it is “clear” or "obvious" that God exists (Eccl. 3:11).

Just because it is objectively obvious, does not mean it is subjectively obvious. In other words, because man is so thoroughly corrupted, we do not always perceive that which is clear. It takes a working of the Holy Spirit–not because the knowledge is hidden, but because we are so corrupt. Psalm 14:1 “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.’ They are corrupt they do abominable deeds; there is none who does good.…” To be “corrupted” means to be spoiled or ruined. In this case, their way of thinking is corrupted.

We can trust that God is powerful and is readily available to all who call on His name

Psalm 145:18: "The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth

2. God Made Everything in Six 24 Hour _Days_. (Gen. 2:1-3).

• Some people say that “Six days” could mean epochs, or lengthy periods of time. They said God then used evolutionary forces to bring about creation over millions and billions of years. Could God have Used Evolution? He could have, but he did _not_. These are 24 hour days. How do we know? The Hebrew word for “day” is the word “Yom.” Yom can be translated as “time,” or “age,” meaning a lengthy period of time (1 Kings 11:42). However, every time the word “Yom” is used with ordinal numbers (such as 1st, 2nd, or 3rd,) it refers to a 24 hour day (Genesis 1:8-2:3; Exodus 14:9,10; Numbers 6:9,10; Numbers 7:12-78; Numbers 28:16,17; Numbers 29:17-35; Joshua 6:14,15; Judges 19:5-8; Judges 20:22-30; Esther 9:17; Esther 9:18; Esther 9:21; Ezekiel 45:21-25.)

• Of special interest are the other times the Bible lists long sequences of days like we find in Genesis 1 and 2. (Num. 7:12-78; 29:12-35; Judges 20:22-30). All these sequences of days are 24 hour days.

• “Evening and morning” are mentioned six times in Genesis 1. Even before the sun, moon and stars existed (they were created on day 4), there is said to have been “evening and morning,” this is the author’s way of communicating a period of time equal to that of an evening and a morning, or 24 hours. Remember, time is not measured ultimately by the sun, it is measured ultimately by God. So, 24 hours existed before the sun was created.

A. Why does God love _patterns_?

God delights in patterns. He finds joy in the repetition of “evening and morning.” He created all things in six days–He could have done it in one day. Ever wonder Why God did not create everything in one day? He could have. He did not because he delights in patterns.

Working 6 days and resting on the seventh is a pattern. God loves patterns because it is who He is. Your life needs to have good patterns because God made you to need His patterns. That is part of being made in the Image of God. Deep down, you delight in patterns as well.

Application:

There are a lot of patterns in life. “Humilty comes before honor,” is a pattern (Prov. 18:12). Working six days and resting on the seventh to worship is a pattern (Ex. 20:9). Properly raised children tend to do well is a pattern (Prov. 22:6). Life works out better if we _embrace_ the patterns God has for us rather than fighting against them.

Rise when the sun rises, sleep when it is dark, work outside in good weather, stay in and enjoy family when it is cold, plant in the Spring, harvest in the Fall, work hard when you are young, pour into others and teach when you are old. All of life has patterns and they are beautiful.

Conclusion:

God exists, He made everything in 6 literal days, and he utilized patterns to do so. He utilized patterns because He delights in them. Our life is happier and easier if we embrace His patterns in our daily life.
