Why Become a Soul-Winner Proverbs 11:30
Someone once asked Lyman Beecher, the great preacher, “Mr. Beecher, what do you consider the greatest thing a human being can do or be?” Without hesitation, the famous pulpiteer replied, “The greatest thing is not that one should be a scientist, important as that is; nor that one should be a statesman, vastly important as that is; nor even that one should be a theologian, immeasurably important as that is. But the greatest thing of all is for one human being to bring another human being to Christ.” (Copied) Every Christian’s job is to witness for Jesus Christ. Past surveys reveal the sad statistic that 90 - 95% of professing Christians never share their faith with non- believers or never have led someone to faith in Jesus Christ. Why should you become a Soul-Winner?
I. Jesus Christ Commanded It
A. Acts 1:8 “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”
B. Mark 16:15 “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.”
C. As believers, we are to take the initiative to witness to people concerning Jesus Christ. It means that we bring the Gospel to them. Too many instead of going are waiting for them to come to us.
D. Christ taught us by His example. He went out of His way to reach them. (e.g. the woman at the well in John 4)
E. Romans 10:14 “How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?”
F. The Great Commission tells us that we are to evangelize, or bring people to Christ, and to make disciples everywhere.
G. Luke 14:23 “And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.”
H. Soul-winning is not a wish or a suggestion; it is Christ’s marching orders for every believer.
I. Jesus’ Purpose Statement for His Church is the Great Commission: “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."
II. The Reality of Hell Necessitates It
A. Ezekiel 18:4 “Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sins, it shall die.”
B. The Word of God proclaims that Jesus Christ is the ONLY way to Heaven in John 14:6. If a person dies without knowing Jesus Christ as his or her Lord and Savior there is only one place for that lost soul to go and that is HELL.
C. There are over 162 references in the New Testament alone which warns of hell. And over 70 of these references were uttered by the Lord Jesus Christ!
D. Luke 16:19-31 “There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;
And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and you art tormented. And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that you would send him to my father’s house: for I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.
