Who Sinned?
Contributed by Gaither Bailey on Jun 15, 2005 (message contributor)
Summary: This sermon addresses the question, "Why do bad things happen to good people?"
Who Sinned? – John 9: 1 - 11
Intro: Close your eyes. Imagine going about all your daily activities. Socks, shoes, shirt, juice – There are blind people in this church today – can’t see: how much God loves U, your own sin, way out, hope.
I. Verse 2 – “Who sinned?
A. We, as modern Christians believe that bad things just don’t happen. – divorce=bad spouse / physically abused=bad kid / fired=bad employee / kids in trouble=bad parent.
B. Indeed there are problems that are a result of our sinful nature. We all make bad choices and sometimes we face pain because of those choices.
C. God does not cause bad things to happen to good people; does God allow them? More likely – things just happen! And they happen for a reason.
II. Verse 3 – There are times God allows pain in our lives so we may become more totally dependent on God. The way we bear our “pain” may be the only gospel some person may “read”.
A. Sanctification – the process that we go through in life that makes us more and more like Jesus – purifying process.
B. (Romans 8:28-29) “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of God’s Son.”
C. The man’s blindness and the manner in which he bore it served as a witness to his strength and reliance on God. The same is true for us.
III. There is no record in the text that Jesus promised the man healing.
A. Verse 6 – Almost all of Jesus’ healing stories involved one thing – physical touch.
B. Allowed Jesus to rub mud on his eyes – very sensitive area – some people can’t wear contact lenses – rub mud on eyes and then blindly go through the city to outside the city walls with no guarantee.
C. We may have sensitive areas where we resist the touch of Jesus. Areas that create pain. If we don’t allow Jesus to touch there, He can’t heal us.
Conclu: Have you opened your eyes to the fact that you can trust Jesus with your everyday life? Do you trust him for today? Have you entrusted your finances to Him? Have you entrusted your kids to Him? Or are you still blind to the fact that Christ Jesus is the only one that can heal your pain in all those areas? --- Who sinned?
