Summary: The women on their way to apply spices to the body of Jesus were concerned because the inability to roll the stone away. To their surprise they discovered the stone had already been rolled away, leading to their encounter with the angel who announced Jesus's resurrection.
Here in our text, we find 2 ladies going to the grave side of someone they love very much! As they approached the place where Christ was, or so they thought, they brought him sweet spices to show remorse, regret, and respect for who he was. As they approached the grave site they were forced with a dilemma, “Who shall roll us away the stone?”
The stone represented 3 things that day.
I. The Stone Represented the Despair of Death.
a. As they thought of the stone placed before the sepulcher, they had to think about Christ’s death.
b. The stone blocked the tomb. No one gets in and no one gets out. The stone stood as a roadblock between them and their loved one! So does death!
c. Death was holding their loved one just as death is holding our loved ones.
d. The stone here was rolled away. One day the stone of death will be rolled away and we too will see our loved ones.
e. 1 Corinthians 15:55-58, Christ could not be held by the stone.
1. Verse 6
2. He is not here; behold the place where they laid him.
II. The Stone Represented the Efforts of the Enemies of Jesus.
a. The stone was sealed by the Romas Empire.
b. Why? Because of the religious leaders, Pharisees, of the day.
c. 1 Corinthians 4:4, “if our gospel be hid it is hid to them that are lost when the god of this world hath blinded their minds.”
III. The Stone Represents anything that Separates us from the Savior.
a. Just like “sin” the stone separates us from God.
b. Isaiah 59:1-2, “Behold the Lord’s hand is not shortened that it cannot save, nor his ear heavy that it cannot hear. But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.”
c. Jesus welcomes and forgives all those who bring their sins to Him.
Conclusion
This is a day of celebration. Why? Because the stone has been rolled away. Who rolled away the stone? What stands between you and Christ today? Let Jesus roll that stone away. Don’t try it yourself.
