Summary: No one is truly worthy to follow Christ unless they are willing to commit to serving God as the top priority of their life.
Who Is Worthy? - Mt 10: 24 - 39
Intro: Jake had been struggling with his faith since his cancer surgery. He was only 22 and had experienced so much and had so many doubts and questions. He decided to enter a theological seminary to study God’s word and hopefully find some answers. When he told his parents of his decision, their response was, “The church must be really desperate! -- Who is really worthy?
I. Verses 26 – 27 --- Who is worthy to speak for God? None! – don’t worry! – God will handle it.
A. All will be known – nothing is hidden.
B. Day will come when things will be seen as they really are – don’t be afraid to speak the truth of Christ.
C. Truth will triumph – James VI threatened to hang Melville – Melville’s answer was “You can’t hang the truth.”
II. Verses 28 – 31 – “So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”
A. God cares for and about you.
B. Jean lost her teenage son to a drug overdose, her husband to heart attack and her house to bank – felt forgotten by God because she was beaten by the world.
C. We, like Jean, often forget the promises of God – Verse 32 – “Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge them before my Father in heaven.”
III. Verse 34 – “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.” Harsh words!!!!!
A. Giddy Christianity – believe following God will bring them happiness and everything they need.
B. The reality is that we experience life in the trenches – life with Christ has no promise of happiness all the time.
C. Verses 37-38 - those who are worthy are willing to follow Christ Jesus even to the cross.
Conclu: Are you worthy of the grace of God? Who IS worthy? - Verse 39 – “Whoever find his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” Who is worthy? Only those who live their life following the risen Christ.
