The Psalms - The Language of Our Faith

Psalm 24 - Who Is This King of Glory?

February 18, 2018

Psalm 24:1 NIV

"The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it."

A cosmological proclamation!!

Psalm 24:3-6 NIV

"Who may ascend the hill of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place? 4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear by what is false. 5 He will receive blessing from the Lord and vindication from God his Savior. 6 Such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek your face, O God of Jacob."

" This is a liturgical Psalm.

" Imagine a group of people walking toward the Temple and asking this question. Imagine your ride to church this morning! ??

When we move toward worship, the Holy Spirit moves toward us.

Worship doesn't allow any of us to hide!

Intro Jon - How do you prepare yourself for worship?

Worship is mysterious and costly.

In both Deuteronomy and Matthew - "Love the Lord with all your heart and all your soul."

Psalm 24:7-10 NIV

"Lift up your heads, O you gates; be lifted up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. 8 Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. 9 Lift up your heads, O you gates; lift them up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. 10 Who is he, this King of glory? The Lord Almighty - he is the King of glory."

Question to Jon - Tell us about your song, Open the Gates, and why gates are so important in this Psalm

Thank you, Jon. Jon exits

Many times, we tend to focus on our condition rather than on the position of Jesus.

2 Corinthians 4:7 NIV

"But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.

This is what worship accomplishes in us - it turns our attention away from our pride or our shame and toward the one who loves us.

v.10 - Who is he, this King of glory? The Lord Almighty - he is the King of glory."

The truth is, our King already ascended a hill, died for us, so we could come near to God in worship.

The Table:

Psalms 51:10-12 NIV

"Create in me a pure heart, O God,

and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

11 Do not cast me from your presence

or take your Holy Spirit from me.

12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation

and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.
