Summary: Satan is not a human being but a spiritual entity created by God. He was perfect and a shining light before pride overtook him. Who is Satan?

TEXT: Job 1:6-7

"Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them. And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it."

WHAT'S IN A NAME?

The names and titles people bear describes who they are. What does the name Satan mean? We will delve into this topic by analysing some of the names and titles of Satan to know who he actually is. First, Satan is not a human being but a spiritual entity created by God. He was perfect and a shining light before pride overtook him. Isaiah 14:12-15 gives a brief insight of Satan's fall from grace.

SATAN

Satan means adversary or enemy which describes his nature as he is the arch enemy of God and God's children (1 Peter 5:9, Matt 13:39). It means that, if your are not on God's side, you are allied with Satan which makes you an enemy of God.

THE DEVIL

One of the most common names of Satan is the devil. The word devil stands for slanderer or false accuser. The devil slanders both God and humanity as evidenced in the garden of Eden when he slandered the character of God in his encounter with Eve (Gen 3:1-5). If you take delight in slandering others, you are in the camp of the devil.

LUCIFER

Satan is also known as Lucifer.

"How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!" (Isa 14:12).

The name Lucifer means 'morning star' or 'light bearer,' obviously referring to his former splendor as one of the great angels God created. He however revolted against God and was thrown down from heaven and became Satan. Some translations use Day Star for Lucifer.

Revelation 22:16 also refers to Jesus as the bright morning star, revealing Jesus as the true light of God (John 1:19).

Ezekiel 28:12-19 describes Satan's beauty and brightness when he was the covering cherub, but pride took over his heart and he wanted to take the seat of God but he was defeated and thrown out of heaven to roam the earth.

Pride is deadly. Do not allow pride deprive you of the blessings of God. Humble yourself before the mighty hand of God and he will lift you up.

PRAYER:

Father, take away whatever will put me in the camp of the devil from my life in Jesus name.

CONFESSION:

I am God's workmanship, created in the image and likeness of God.

God bless you. Shalom.
