INTRODUCTION:

The question Jesus asked His disciples in Matthew 16:15 is one of the most profound and life-defining questions in the entire Bible: “Who do you say I am?” This question is not just directed at the disciples but at every individual, including you and me. It is easy to repeat what others say about Jesus, but the real issue is whether we have a personal revelation of who He is.

For some, Jesus is just a great teacher, a prophet, or a religious figure. For others, He is the Son of God, the Saviour of the world, and their personal Redeemer. Your understanding of who Jesus is will determine your relationship with Him and how you experience His power in your life. In this sermon, we will explore the different names and titles of Jesus in Scripture, revealing His divine nature, His role in our salvation, and His relevance to us today.

1. JESUS – THE SAVIOUR OF THE WORLD

From the beginning, God’s plan was to send Jesus to redeem humanity from the bondage of sin.

a) Jesus is the Lamb of God (John 1:29)

John the Baptist, upon seeing Jesus, declared, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice for our sins, fulfilling the Old Testament requirement of a spotless lamb for atonement.

b) Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6)

In this powerful statement, Jesus makes it clear that He is the only way to the Father. There are no multiple paths to God—Jesus is the one and only way to eternal life.

c) Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life (John 11:25-26)

When Jesus told Martha that He was the resurrection and the life, He demonstrated His power over death by raising Lazarus from the grave. Those who believe in Him will live eternally, even if they die physically.

d) Jesus is the Good Shepherd (John 10:11)

A shepherd’s primary role is to care for and protect the sheep. Jesus, as the Good Shepherd, laid down His life to save us from destruction. He watches over us, leads us, and provides for our needs.

e) Biblical Example: The Thief on the Cross (Luke 23:39-43)

One of the thieves crucified beside Jesus recognised Him as the Saviour. Because of his faith, Jesus assured him, “Today, you will be with me in paradise.” This illustrates that salvation comes through Jesus alone.

2. JESUS – THE SON OF GOD AND SON OF MAN

Jesus is unique because He is both fully God and fully human, making Him the perfect mediator between God and man.

a) Jesus is the Son of God (Matthew 3:17)

At His baptism, God Himself affirmed Jesus' identity: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” This declaration establishes His divine nature.

b) Jesus is the Son of Man (Daniel 7:13)

Jesus frequently referred to Himself as the Son of Man, a title that signifies His connection with humanity. This title also aligns with Daniel’s prophecy of the Messiah receiving authority and an everlasting kingdom.

c) Jesus is the Image of the Invisible God (Colossians 1:15)

Jesus is the exact representation of God. To see Jesus is to see the Father, for He embodies God’s nature in human form.

d) Jesus is the Word Made Flesh (John 1:1,14)

Jesus existed from the beginning as the Word of God and took on human flesh to dwell among us. He is God in human form, revealing God’s will to mankind.

e) Biblical Example: Jesus Walks on Water (Matthew 14:22-33)

When Jesus walked on water, He demonstrated His divine authority over nature. Peter’s faith wavered, but Jesus, both God and man, rescued him, showcasing His power to save.

3. JESUS – THE KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS

Jesus is not just a prophet or a wise teacher—He is the ruling King of all creation.

a) Jesus is the King of Kings (Revelation 19:16)

Jesus reigns supreme over all earthly kings and rulers. His dominion is eternal, and His kingdom will never end.

b) Jesus is the Alpha and Omega (Revelation 1:8)

This title signifies that Jesus is the beginning and the end, meaning He holds time and eternity in His hands.

c) Jesus is the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6)

Unlike worldly rulers who seek power through war, Jesus brings true peace—peace with God and inner peace for those who trust Him.

d) Jesus is the Lion of the Tribe of Judah (Revelation 5:5)

This title highlights His power and authority. He is the conquering King who has defeated sin, death, and Satan.
