Who Do You Trust
Contributed by Ryan Akers on Sep 23, 2005 (message contributor)
Summary: Trusting ourselves is sometimes a dangerous choice. If we only rely on ourselves to solve all our problems we will fail. God’s Word says all our trust should be in Him.

Who do you trust?
That is quite a question I think.
Its kind of makes me laugh at when I think of everything we trust in. Let’s start out with your day and look at what you trust in.
These will be people and objects
Ryan’s Day,
6:30 wake up take Sydney out to pee and feed her
6:30 and 30 seconds-rush from taking Sydney outside to the bathroom because I am about to pee my pants.
6:35 sit and watch Sports Center
6:36 Get annoyed because the dumb dog keeps jumping on the door but I don’t feel like getting off the couch yet.
6:40 try to get to the shower before Taylor does
7:20 Start my shower after Taylor finally gets out
7:23 Get out of the shower and get dressed.
4:30 Go home from work
now I skipped a couple of steps but lets look at everything I had to put trust in.
1. put trust in my house. That its not going to fall and its going to keep me protected and safe.
2. put trust in my toilet that its not going to explode or anything like that.
3. trust my television that it will work.
4. trust that my shower and running water will.
5. trust that my clothes will not be torn and that I can wear them.
6. trust that my wife will not use all of the hot water(big act of trust)
7. trust that I can make it too work without tripping and killing myself.
Those are little things we trust in. But we put our trust in a lot of other things as well.
Things that we trust:
1.Friends(boyfriends, girlfriends) breakup, betraying
2.Family(provide for us, love us)
3.Material things( cars, electronics, clothes)
Problem with putting our trust in those areas is that they can fail us at any time.
Friends-Girlfriends/Boyfriends can betray you, cheat on you, lie to you, talk about you behind your back. EX. JUDAS BETRAYED JESUS
Family- people in your family that love you will make mistakes, will do things that you had no idea about, sometimes will betray you also. EX. FATHER DISOWNING ME, LYING ABOUT MY NEW COMPUTER TO MY STEPFATHER.
Material possessions- Cars break down, televisions break, clothes ware out
EX. RICH GIRLS TV SHOW, TRYING TO USE THIS FANCY GPS SYSTEM IN THEIR CAR. THEY TRUSTED IT TO LEAD THEM TO THE RIGHT PLACE AND IT ONLY GOT THEM LOST.
So man who do we trust!
I don’t make sound very exciting do I? Can’t trust your friends, can’t trust your family, can’t trust the things you own. Who do you trust?
It’s plain in Proverbs 3:5-6
“Trust in the Lord your God with all of your heart, and lean not on your own understanding, in all of your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight.”
WE CAN ANSWER THE WHO DO YOU TRUST QUESTION BY LOOKING AT THE WHO, HOW, AND WHY QUESTIONS. FIRST…
WHO DO WE TRUST?
1. TRUST GOD, “Trust in the Lord with all of your heart.”
What does that mean to trust with all of your heart?
This is brought up again in the bible when someone asked Christ what is the greatest commandment, what is the greatest thing we should follow if we only follow one thing, Christ said to love God with all of your heart.
Do you love something with all of your heart. Are you so passionate about something that it just wells up in you. Some are like that about sports like me and OU, some are like that about friends or family.
To love something with all of your heart means you are totally dedicated to it no matter what. No matter what happens you will not back down from it. you desire to be with it, to be consumed by it. all of your feeling and emotions are poured into it. Do you have something like that? Like I said for some its sports, for others its money, for some of you it might be popularity, or your friends.
Christ says to love God like this, to be consumed by him to put all of your emotions, all of your fears, excitements, struggles into him. To come to a place where you love Him so much that no matter what someone says or does to you whether they threaten your life, you are so consumed with love for Him that it would be an honor not a fear to die for him.
The same is with this scripture on trust. We should put our Trust in God alone. Every problem, struggle, frustration, we should trust in God to get us through it.
So how do we do it?
HOW DO WE TRUST?
2. DON’T TRUST YOURSELF. “Lean not on your own understanding.”
