Summary: It Is very Important that we have knowledge of who we follow; moreover, we have attributes that come from who we follow and that the opinion we have will be the opinion of the world; Therefore it is all the more important that we esteem our following.

WHO DO YOU SAY HE IS

THE QUESTION THIS EVENING IS WHO DO YOU SAY HE IS

Matt 16:13-15 KING JAMES VERSION

13 When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?

14 And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.

15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?

Matt 16:13-15 AMPLIFIED VERSION

13 Now when Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, Who do people say that the Son of Man is?

14 And they answered, Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.

15 He said to them, But who do you [yourselves] say that I am?

IT IS NOT PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT WHO THE WORLD SAYS HE IS, HOWEVER, IT IS IMPORTANT WHO THE CHURCH SAYS HE IS BECAUSE PEOPLE WILL MAKE THEIR CALL AND ELECTION BASED UPON WHAT:

1) YOU’VE SAID

2) YOU SAID YOU’VE SEEN

3) YOU SAID YOU’VE HEARD

THE OLD FOLK PUT IT THIS WAY: WHAT GOES ON IN THE HOUSE - STAYS IN THE HOUSE. THAT’S TO SAY OUR PROBLEMS ARE OUR PROBLEMS AND THE WORLD DOES NOT NEED TO SEE OR HEAR EVERYTHING.

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT THE WORLD KNOWS WHO WE ARE FOLLOWING OR CONNECTED TO, IT IS EVEN MORE IMPORTANT THAT WE KNOW WHO WE ARE FOLLOWING AND CONNECTED TO AN UNDERSTAND THAT WHAT WE OBSERVE CAN BE A MATTER OF LIFE OR DEATH TO OUR LEADERSHIP DEPENDENT UPON OUR RESPONSE TO THE WORLD, SINCE THE ONLY SERMON THEY WILL HEAR IS THE ONE THEY SEE.

IN THIS PARTICULAR TEXT THERE WAS A CONVERSATION THAT AROSE AS JESUS AND HIS DISCIPLES WERE MAKING THERE JOURNEY TO CEASAREA PHILIPPI.

DISCIPLE MEANS:

“LEARNER” THE MEANING APPLIES TO ONE WHO PROFESSES TO HAVE LEARNED CERTAIN PRINCIPLES FROM ANOTHER AND MAINTAINS THEM BY THEIR AUTHORITY.

JESUS ASKS THEM WHO DO MEN SAY THAT I THE SON OF MAN IS..

HE ASKS A QUESTION AND GIVES AN ANSWER AT THE SAME.

THE ONLOOKERS THESE DISCIPLES HAD ENCOUNTERED HAD PASSED THEIR OWN OPINION OF WHO THEY THOUGHT HE WAS BUT THE QUESTION WAS NOT FOR THE ONLOOKERS BUT FOR THE DISCIPLES TO GATHER THE OPINION OF THE WORLD.

SCRIPTURE SAYS:THAT THE DISCIPLES’ RESPONSE WAS - SOME SAYS YOU ARE:

1) JOHN THE BAPTIST

2) ELIAS - ELIJAH

3) JEREMIAS - JEREMIAH

4) ONE OF THE PROPHETS

OK THAT’S GOOD - WONDERFUL - THEY HAVE ANSWERED INCORRECTLY.

WHO DO YOU SAY I AM?

IT WAS OF EXTREME IMPORTANCE THAT THE DISCIPLES KNEW WHO HE WAS

AFTER ALL THIS WAS WHO THEY WERE FOLLOWING.

FOR YEARS THEY HAD OBSERVED FROM UP CLOSE:

1) HIS PERSONALITY

2) HIS PURPOSE

3) HIS PEOPLE SKILLS

4) HIS PASSION

AS WE DO IN MOST CHURCHES, WE OBSERVE UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL AND YET WE DON’T:

1)LOOK LIKE WHO WE OBSERVED

2)ACT LIKE WHO WE OBSERVED

3)THINK LIKE WHO WE OBSERVED

IF I WERE TO ASK A QUESTION THIS EVENING - WHO DO YOU SAY HE IS; MANY WOULD SAY THAT HE IS THE:

WONDERFUL COUNSELOR-MIGHTY GOD-BREAD OF LIFE

IF HE IS EVERYTHING WE SAY HE IS THEN WE SHOULD HAVE SOME OF HIS ATTRIBUTES.

THE PEOPLE OF OLD SAID: IF YOU FEED SOMEONE LONG ENOUGH THEY WILL START LOOKING LIKE YOU.

MY SUGGESTION IS THAT WE HAVE BEEN FED LONG ENOUGH TO HAVE AT LEAST ONE ATTRIBUTE THAT IS DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY IN RESEMBLANCE OF THE ONE WE FOLLOW.

WE THE PEOPLE OF GOD SHOULD HAVE A PORTION OF OUR LEADERS SPIRIT.

SPIRIT IS:

1) ATTITUDE

2) MOOD

3) RESPONSE

WHO DO YOU SAY HE IS

JESUS WALKS THE ROAD TO SUFFERING AND THEREFORE EARNS HIS TITLE AND IS WORTHY OF HIS HONOR.

HONOR IS: 1) ESTEEM 2) RESPECT 3) REVERENCE

JESUS HAS BEEN TAKEN TO BE: JOHN THE BAPTIST, ELIJAH, JEREMIAH, AND ONE OF THE PROPHETS

WHO WILL SPEAK UP ON HIS BEHALF

WHO WILL SAY HE IS:

KING OF KINGS- LORD OF LORDS-WHEEL IN THE VALLEY

ALPHA AND OMEGA-BEGINNING AND END

WHO WILL YOU SAY HE IS
