Message Point: God is our perfect father.
Focus Passage: Romans 8:12-17
Introduction:
According to one expert children go through 4 stages of dealing with their fathers. In stage one, they call you da-da. In stage 2 they grow and call you daddy. As they mature and reach stage 3 they call you dad. Finally in stage 4 they call you collect.... So who’s your daddy?
Whether you have a good relationship or not with your earthly father is not my point today, because you can always have a great relationship with my Heavenly Father. And that is what I want to spend a little time this morning to look at Him and the example He sits for us earthly fathers as well.
I. The Example He Gives
a. Great Fathers love unconditionally. God Loves You and there’s not a thing you can do about it!
b. Great Fathers put their children first. Jesus was always putting the needs of others before His own.
c. Great Fathers look out for their children’s future. Jesus desire was for everyone to be able to call Him, Father.
II. The Type of Father He is: Our Father When Jesus was teaching us to pray; He starts out with the words, “Our Father in heaven”. These are some of the most well known words in the bible. Most can quote at least the beginning of the Lord’s Prayer. And what a privilege to be able to address our mighty maker in this way. “Our Father”.
Isaiah 63:16b, You , O Lord, are our Father; Our Redeemer from Everlasting is Your name.
a. He is a willing Father. John 3:16 (2Tim 2:3-4) This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
b. He is a wailing Father Matt. 23:37 "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling.
c. He is a waiting Father. Luke 15 (Prodigal Son)
