Summary: When Revival Comes
Jonah 3: 1-10 When Revival Comes in Nineveh between 600,000 - million people brought to repentance. The revival gave them another 150 years before they were destroyed Everyone in Nineveh was saved before the 40 day deadline. I. The Essence of Revival (a) It's Source - Revival Is Essentially The Work Of God!
A. Involved a Man 1 And the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time
A Changed Man, A Chastened Man - the second time
A Challenged Man - 2 Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.
B. a Message 4 Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.
God's Judgement is :- Consuming, Convincing, Coming, Calling.
1. There is a Set time, (forty days)
2. It is a Solemn time, (Nineveh shall be overthrown)
3. It is a Short time (forty days and...)
4. It is a Sacred time - It Determines Destiny.
C. a Miracle 5 So the people of Nineveh believed God, City Saved
D. Mercy 10 And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not. (b) It's Course - 6 For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. 7 And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water: (c) It's Force - 5 So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.
II. The Elements of Revival A. Faith - 5 So the people of Nineveh believed God, Romans 10:17 - "Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God." - Notice: The text says that "they believed God" - not Jonah. They responded to the Word and the claims of God. Repentance is a change of MIND which results in a change of HEART which results in a change of ATTITUDE which results in a change in ACTION - 2 Cor. 7: 10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: B. Fasting - 5 and proclaimed a fast, - taking sin seriously C. Fear - 5 and put on sackcloth,
D. Forsaking - 8 yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands. They named their sins - evil way and violence. - Judgement Discerned They blamed their sins - Judgement Deserved They shamed their sins - Judgement Delayed E. Forgiveness - 9 Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not? III. The Extent of Revival - 5 So the people of Nineveh believed God,
Universal - All believed, Personal - Individually, Radical - Saved IV. The Effects of Revival - 10 And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not. Nineveh made a decision for God AND THEN God made a decision. God Relented, when Nineveh Repented!
