Sermons

Summary: In this sermon series we are comparing the early chapters of Genesis with the late chapters in John. In this sermon, we explore how the Fall happened because man wanted to become like God and salvation happened because God was willing to become a man.

THE TEMPTION IN THE FALL: Satan told Adam and Eve that they could become like God.

- Genesis 3:5.

SIDE NOTE: This was also the issue in Satan’s fall.

- Isaiah 14:12-15; Ezekiel 28:11-19; 1 Timothy 3:6.

- His pride and desire to lift himself up.

- Look up Isaiah 14:12-14.

THE GREAT REVERSAL: The Fall happened because man wanted to become like God; salvation happened because God was willing to become man.

- John 19:6-7.

- John 1:1-3; John 5:18; John 8:57-58; John 10:30-33; Philippians 2:5-11.

- Note in John 19:6-7 the ironic statement about them complaining that Jesus claimed to be the Son of God.

WHY DID JESUS NEED TO DO THAT?

- Can’t fully unpack all the elements of this, but let’s hit a few highlights.

- Look up the two Matthew verses.

1. I can’t perfectly live up to God’s standard.

- Matthew 5:17.

2. I couldn’t pay the price for my sin.

- Matthew 20:28; 1 Corinthians 6:20.

WHAT THAT OPENS UP TO US: It does not open up that we might “know . . . good and evil” “like God” but rather that we be good like God.

- Genesis 3:5.

- 2 Corinthians 3:18; Philippians 3:21; 2 Peter 1:4; 1 John 3:2.
