When God Says No Series

WHEN GOD SAYS NO
Introduction:
David decided that he was going to build God a Temple. David could not handle the fact that he was living in a Palace and the Ark of the Covenant was under a tent. In our text, we see the Covenant that God made with David.
There are 2 main points from this Covenant.
1. God sometimes says no.
Nathan had told David to build the Temple; but then he had a dream. God told Nathan to tell David that he was not the person to build the Temple.
Here was God’s answer to David’s proposal:
* “Are you the one to build me a house to dwell in?”
God wanted David to remember who was in charge. Choosing who was going to build the Temple was God’s decision, not David’s.
* “I don’t need a house.”
God wanted David to remember who He was- A God who is everywhere, all the time.
* “The way I have chosen to reveal My presence among My people in the past fits My purposes.”
God wanted David to remember who He had been. He pointed to His faithfulness in the past to make sure David wouldn’t doubt it in the present.
2. God’s people sometimes give bad advice.
Nathan had given David bad advice; but he did give him God’s words after that night.
Conclusion:
God gave David several promises. The timing was different for these promises.
In the near future, God promised…
* A dynasty of kings.
* A construction delay.
In the distant future, God promised…
* An everlasting kingdom.
* A coming Messiah.
