Summary: Death is the common lot of the rich and the poor, the godly and ungodly.
Verse 19-“There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day.
Shows that a man may do well in this world and lousy in the next.
Verse 20-But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate
The sin of this rich man was not so much his dress or his diet, but his providing only for himself.
Matt. 25:31-46-I was hungry and you gave me no meat—I wonder how rich people who have read the gospel of Christ, and say they believe it can be so unconcerned.
Those will have a great deal to answer for!
Verse 21-desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.
The dogs were more kind to him than the rich man.
Verse 22-So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried.
Death is the common lot of the rich and the poor, the godly and ungodly.
Lazarus—no funerals but angels.
Rich man—funeral but no angels.
Verse 23-24-And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
Then he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
He had no mercy on Lazarus but he expects Lazarus to have mercy on him.
Tongue-That same tongue he cursed with and tasted of all that good food, is now tormented
Verse 25-But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented.
Son, remember—and they will!
All the denials, all the chances, all the blessings from God, His protection).
Did you noticed, he never questioned why he was in hell!
In heaven, just like hell we will remember the things that happened down here!
In heaven, we may even know what is going on down here, when we are up there! (Abraham knew about the rich man and how Lazarus was treated)
Verse 26-And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.’
The rich man put a gulf between himself and the poor man, now God has put a gulf between Lazarus and the rich man
Verse 27-28-“Then he said, ‘I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father’s house, for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.
He could have had his prayers answered on earth, now they are in vain.
The ungodly dead believe in missions, and going to church, and reaching the lost.
Because in hell once you are there; you are there!!!
When we are in heaven we will understand why some of our friends, family are not there!
Verse 29-Abraham said to him, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them
God has a plan and only one plan and we are it!!! We are to reach the lost!
Verse 30-And he said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’
Men think there plan is better than God’s that’s why they wind up in hell!
Verse 31-But he said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.’”
People should have come flocking to Jesus after His resurrection.
