Psalm 116 12 What shall I render unto the LORD?
1. Our Debts
A) The Lord Heard Him!
1 I love the LORD, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications.
God Had Listened To Him - God Answers Prayer
I know not by what methods rare, But this I know, God answers prayers.
I know that He has given His Word, Which tells me prayer is always heard,
And will be answered, soon or late, And so I pray and calmly wait.
I know not if the blessing sought, Will come in just the way I thought;
But leave my prayers with Him alone, Whose will is wiser than my own,
Assured that He will grant my quest, Or send some answer far more blest.
B) The Lord Helped Him! -
God Had Lifted Him -
3 The sorrows of death compassed me, and the pains of hell gat hold upon me: I found trouble and sorrow. 4 Then called I upon the name of the LORD; O LORD, I beseech thee, deliver my soul.
God specializes in lifting the fallen and strengthening the weak
1 Cor 1:27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;
C) The Lord Honoured Him!
7 Return unto thy rest, O my soul; for the LORD hath dealt bountifully with thee. 8 For thou hast delivered my soul from death, mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling.
God Had Liberated Him - (Notice what God has done for the believer!) 1. Liberated From His Sentence - Salvation and eternal life! 2. Liberated From His Sorrow - Replaced his sorrow with joy -
1 Pet. 1:8; Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: 3. Liberated From His Stumbling - Given a firm foundation upon which to stand
Psa. 40:1 I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.
2 He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. John 8:36. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
Ill. Lazarus - John 11:44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.
PAUL I Cor 9:20 And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law; 21 To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law. 22 To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.
The Call Of God. I Corinthians 9:16 For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!
The Condition Of The People
The Consciousness of what the gospel had done for him.
The Content Of The Gospel Rom 1:14 I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise.15 So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also. 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
2. Our Duties 12 What shall I render unto the LORD?
Seven Vows of David in Psalm Ch. 116
1. I will love the Lord (Ps. 116:1).
2. I will call upon Him as long as I live (Ps. 116:2).
3. I will walk before the Lord in the land of the living (Ps. 116:9).
4. I will take the cup of salvation and call upon the name of the Lord (Ps. 116:13).
The MEANING of the cup is SALVATION.
Hebrews 9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
The MESSAGE of the cup is SUBMISSION
v. 13b “I will CALL upon the name of the Lord”
