What Psalm 100 Says About Thanksgiving

"Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands! Serve the Lord with gladness; come before His presence with singing. Know that the Lord, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; we are His people and the sheep of His pasture. Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name. For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting, and His truth endures to all generations" (Ps. 100).

1. What people, beyond believers, does God want to worship Him?

"Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands" (Ps. 100:1).

All God’s children should praise Him.

Even unsaved should praise God.

2. When will the unsaved join believers in worshiping Him?

"Therefore, God hath highly exhalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow in heaven, and of those on earth, and those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus is Lord"

(Phil. 2:9-11).

3. Why are we commanded to "shout to the Lord"? "True worshipers will worship the Lord in spirit and truth, for the Father seeketh such to worship Him" (John 4:23).

A shout represents all that is within us.

A shout lets others know what we think or feel.

We shout at something or someone.

4. What are three ways we can worship God? "Serve the Lord with gladness; come before His presence with singing. Know that the Lord, He is God" (Ps. 100:2-3).

By the things we do for Him.

By our singing.

By learning about God and knowing Him.

5. What four things we can know that will motivate us to worship the Lord? "Know . . . it is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture" (Ps. 100:3).

Know God is our creator.

Realize we did not make us what we are.

Recognize we belong to Him.

Respond as sheep to the shepherd.

6. How can you worship God your Creator for creating you? "Know . . . it is He who has made us, and not we ourselves" (Ps. 100:3).\

Thank God for every part of your body and mind.

Thank God for your family.

7. How can you worship God your Protector for caring for you? "We are his people, and the sheep of His pasture" (Ps. 100:3).

Thank God for good health.

Thank God for provision, i.e., money, house, things.

8. What two responses should begin your worship? "Enter into his presence with thanksgiving and into His courts with praise" (Ps. 100:4).

Come to God’s house every Sunday to thank Him there.

Audibly and corporately worship God for His care for you.

9. The Psalmist repeats these two responses. How will you use them?

"Be thankful to Him, and bless His holy name" (Ps. 100:3).

Make a list of the things for which you are most thankful.

Make a list of the many names of God and talk to Him using His many names.

10. What three attributes of God does the Psalmist include in his benediction? "For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting, and His truth endures to all generations" (Ps. 100:5).

Goodness is God’s nature that disposes Him to do good things for us.

Mercy is God’s goodness manifested to those in distress.

Truth is God telling us the way things are, to tell us how to live for Him.

11. Can you list His other suggested names beyond the two listed?

"Know that the Lord, He is God" (v. 3).

If we are sheep, He is our Shepherd.

If we enter His courts, He is our King.

If we serve Him, He is our Master.

If we are created, He is the Creator.
