John 2:13-22 “What Jesus looked like”

1. Description of Jesus:

The Letter of Lentulus (/'l?ntj?l?s/) is an epistle of mysterious origin that was first widely published in Italy in the fifteenth century. It purports to be written by a Roman official, and gives a physical and personal description of Jesus.

• The letter may have influenced how Jesus was later physically depicted in art. Lentulus, the Governor of the Jerusalemites to the Roman Senate and People, greetings.

• There has appeared in our times, and there still lives, a man of great power (virtue), called Jesus Christ. The people call him prophet of truth; his disciples, son of God. He raises the dead, and heals infirmities.

• His beholders can both fear and love him.

• He was never known to laugh, but often to weep. His stature is straight, his hands and arms beautiful to behold. His conversation is grave, infrequent, and modest. He is the most beautiful among the children of men.

2. Scripture describe Jesus

• Isaiah says, he is A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief (Isaiah 53:3)

• At the transfiguration he is described as His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow (Matthew 28:3) He was transfigured before his disciples, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light

• The pioneer and perfecter of faith, who endured the cross and sat down at the right hand of God (Hebrews 12:2)

• John describes Jesus as full of truth and grace John 1:14 “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, full of grace and truth.”

Revelation 1:14-15 “The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire, his feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the roar of many waters.”

3. Many texts tell us Jesus loved

• He loved the church Even at the age of 12 Jesus knew the necessity of being in church.

• He loved the holiness, sanctity, purity of the church

• He loved His disciples he said, as the Father loves me so I love you, 12My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.

• He loves the Lost he told Jerusalem, “34"O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!

• He Loved others 26As they led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus. 27A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him. 28Jesus turned and said to them, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children.

4. Today we see a Jesus who is upset with what’s happening in the temple

• Jesus once he entered the temple, he acknowledges the injustices going on the temple

• This church temple was not giving God worthy praise. Jesus wants our praise listen:

Luke 19:37-40 As He was approaching, the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles which they had seen, shouting: BLESSED IS THE KING WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD; Peace in heaven and glory in the highest! Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Him, Teacher, rebuke Your disciples. But Jesus answered, I tell you, if these become silent, the stones will cry out!

• Another injustice was the Temple is supposed to be a soul saving station. The temple was doing injustices to lost souls

5. Once Jesus acknowledge the injustices he "drives out"

• He drives out Those that sold sheep, oxen, doves, and the money changers.

• Jesus want drive out sin in our lives so we can be dead to sin but alive to God.

• Paul writes …11Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts,

• Jesus also wants to drive out the harmful inhabitants (Hatred, anger, unfaithfulness, unhappiness, grief, sorrow, sadness etc…) consider what God desired of Israel. "'But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land, those you allow to remain will become barbs in your eyes and thorns in your sides. They will give you trouble in the land where you will live.

• What inhabitants are in us that need removed or driven out?
