Summary: 2 foundations and the question I ask is: Which foundation is your faith built upon?
“What Is Your Foundation?”
Matthew 7:24-27
8-4-2016 AM
Although our text this morning started at verse 24 the beginning of the subject begins at verse 21.
When we read this in context we see that the subject is our relationship with God.
Jesus was speaking during what we know as the “Sermon On The Mount” which starts in Matthew 5:1.
Our verse study today is at the end of this great Sermon.
Jesus is concluding that in order to have a home in heaven there must be a relationship on earth.
Then Jesus seems to indicate that there is evidence to this relationship that others can observe.
The little word “Doeth”= Verb: to perform, execute, or accomplish
In Verse 21 the question is begging to be asked; “What is the will of God?”
1. Salvation – 2 Peter 3:9 “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”
2. Transformation – Romans 12:1-2 “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
3. Conformation or Conformed – Romans 8:29 “For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
Vs. 22-23 Jesus is simply telling us there is no defense for the case of WORKS. The argument is already lost.
Vs. 24 Once again the word “doeth”
Little phrase “wise man” = mindful of one’s interest
Vs. 25
Rain = heavy shower / violent storm
Floods = overflowing rivers / torrent
Winds = violent, strong winds
Beat upon = able to destroy
Notice It fell not: for it was founded upon a rock
Vs. 26 doeth them not… foolish man = fool (moros or English moron) = Lacking good judgment.
Psalms 14:1 “The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.”
Vs. 27 “…it fell, and great was the fall of ot.”
Same event different outcome?????
Only answer – Different foundation
Conclusion:
What is your foundation?
Where did the foundation come from?
Man or God
Without Christ as the foundation then your faith is doomed to fail and fall.
It isn’t about the storms in life because we all have them.
The question; will your works keep you safe throughout the storms?
Answer: NO
But is Christ Storms will still be upon us, yet we find the end is not destruction but safety in Christ.
It’s not the sinners prayer as so many claim will save, it is calling upon our hope of salvation and that is Jesus.
