Summary: Exploring the origination, historicity, genres, and remedy to the malady called sin!
Sin Defined:
Deut. 9:7, Joshua 14:12-15 Sin is rebellion against God.
James 4:17 Sin is whosoever knows what is good but doesn’t do it.
1 John 3:4 Sin is lawlessness (chaos, disorder, unruliness, etc.).
Historicity of Sin:
Sin originated with Lucifer (back in heaven) - Isaiah 14:12-15
? Satan owns the patent for Sin, Adam & Eve got the franchise –
Genesis 3
? Sin is hereditary, and ubiquitous across humankind, Romans 5:12
? Sin is a stalker, glamourous, entrapping (God told Cain), Gen. 4:7
? Sin can only be nullified by God’s forgiveness, and the Blood – a
songwriter wrote; what can wash away my sin? nothing but the
Blood of Jesus... (the wages of sin is death Romans 6:23
Three Categories of Sin:
Inherited Sin: this is a passed-on depravity. We are sinners not
because we sin; rather we sin because we’re sinners! Psalm 51:5.
? Imputed Sin: this became with the law of Moses; prior to 10
commandments, there was no imputed sin (only inherited sin) -
Romans 4:15 – then the law came to impute sin Romans 5:13
? Personal Sin: is that which is committed everyday by everybody
from lying to murder due to our inherited Adamic sin nature.
The remedy to the malady:
We must be individually bornagain; John 3:3-15, 1 John 3:9.
? Using the principle of imputation, God impute the sins of
believers to Christ (1 John 2:2), and in turn imputes the
righteousness of Christ to bornagain believers (2 Corinthians
5:21).
? And, Let everyone that nameth the name of Christ depart from
iniquity, 2 Timothy 2:19 – doable by the power of the Holy Ghost.
Quotable quotes:
The Greek word translated "imputed" means "to take something
that belongs to someone and credit it to another's account."
? Sin is mentioned 448 times across 389 verses of the Bible.
? "If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us our
sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9).
? The canal nature wars against our new-man in Christ (Romans 7;
1 Corinthians 3:1-3; 2 Corinthians 10:2; Galatians 5:16-19).
Reflections:
Humans are triple condemned on the three count charges of
inherited sin, imputed sin, and personal sin. The only just penalty for
the trio sin is death (Romans 6:23), both physical death and eternal
death (Revelation 20:11-15).
Hallelujah! inherited sin, imputed sin, and personal sin were all
crucified on the cross of Jesus, and by bornagain faith in Jesus Christ
as Lord and Saviour "we have redemption through His blood, the
forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace" (Ephesians 1:7).
What does true Christianity look like in spite of sin?
“Nobody who is born of God continues to sin, for the seed of God abides in him/her.”
