What Is New Testament Worship?

(John 4:23) - But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

Jesus told Satan in (Matt 4:10) Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

We know that we are to worship God.

But how are we supposed to worship God?

Our way or according to God’s commandments. (John 15:9) But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. The Commandments of Men are vain.

The Apostle Paul found those on Mars Hill involved in Ignorant Worship. (Acts 17:23) “I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship,”

The Apostle Paul wrote of a type of WILL worship. (Col 2:23)

Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.

Worship in Spirit and in Truth (John 4:24) - God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

How do we worship in Spirit?

Gladness - Ps 122:1 “I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD.”

Decently and in Order – (1 Cor 14:40) Let all things be done decently and in order. Not haphazardly or with chaos, but respectfully with honor toward God.

Proper Behavior. (1 Timothy 3:15) But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. The Pillar and Ground of the Truth is the Church.

What are the Facets of New Testament Worship?

Singing (Eph.5:19) Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; (Colossians 3:16) Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Study of God’s Word (2 Tim 2:15) Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. We cannot correctly understand God’s Word unless we study it. It is through this study that we become approved unto God and therefore unashamed.

Prayer (1 Thes. 5:17) Pray without ceasing. (Matt 21:13) And Jesus said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; (Acts 6:4) But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.(Eph 6:18) Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

Giving (1 Cor 16:2) Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come. (2 Cor 9:6,7) But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.

Lord Supper (Matt 26:26-29) And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.

(1 Cor 11:23) For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come. Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.
