What If Jesus Had Not Come
Contributed by Howard Gwartney on Dec 24, 2018 (message contributor)
Summary: Most all of us in this room are so glad and grateful that Jesus came to earth! But did you ever stop and think about what this time of the year would be like if Jesus HAD NOT come to earth?
WHAT IF JESUS HAD NOT COME?
Isaiah 9:6
Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
1. NO CARDS
Why there would be no reason for folks to send greeting cards at this time of the year. It would just be winter in most places. You wouldn’t want to send a card that says, “Seasons Greetings! I’m glad it’s freezing, snowing and cold where you are!”
2. NO CAROLS; NO CHORUS
We would have no Silent Night. No O Come All Ye Faithful; No Angels We Have Heard on High; No Little Town of Bethlehem; No Away in a Manger; No Gloria in Excelsis Deo; No Joy to the World; No Hark the Herald Angels Sing; No Beautiful Star of Bethlehem; No Angels from the Realms of Glory; No O Holy Night.
We would be like Israel when they were carried away into captivity. Look at what they did when they got to Babylon:
Psalm 137:1 By the rivers of Babylon, There we sat down, yea, we wept when we remembered Zion. 2 We hung our harps upon the willows in the midst of it. 3 For there those who carried us away captive asked of us a song, And those who plundered us requested mirth, Saying, “Sing us one of the songs of Zion!” 4 How shall we sing the LORD’s song in a foreign land?
3. NO COMFORT
Let’s face it! Sometimes the things of life are difficult, discouraging and even painful, at times! Can you imagine if Jesus had not come that there would be no comfort through the trials of life. Whenever there was trouble in our lives, we would just somehow try to “suck it up” on our own. But look at what Paul said in:
2 Corinthians 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
4. NO CALM
Think about it: Our lives would be in constant turmoil without any relief in sight for any of us! We would not know or understand the meaning of verses like:
Psalm 107:29 He calms the storm, so that its waves are still.
Because Jesus came the first time, we can have a calmness in our spirit even though everything else in life is falling down around us. Jesus gives us the came in the middle of the storms of life.
5. NO CONSOLATION
2 Corinthians 1:5 For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds through Christ.
The word for consolation is paraklesis which means encouragement. We would have no encouragement in suffering. When someone we loved died, there would be no hope without Jesus Christ. No consolation!
6. NO CHRIST
Our Messiah would not have come! No deliverer in Zion! No one to pay our sin debt on the cross of Calvary.
John 7:26 But look! He speaks boldly, and they say nothing to Him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is truly the Christ? 27 However, we know where this Man is from; but when the Christ comes, no one knows where He is from.”
John 7:31 And many of the people believed in Him, and said, “When the Christ comes, will He do more signs than these which this Man has done?”
7. NO CHANCE
A. Of Redemption – We would die in our sins
B. Of Reconciliation – We would be enemies of God
C. Of Rejoicing – We would be miserable
8. NO CELEBRATION
If Jesus had not come, there would be absolutely nothing to celebrate! No reason for happiness, no reason for laughter, no reason for giving gifts, no reason for rejoicing! Instead of being the “most wonderful time of the year,” it would likely be the most miserable time of the year!
And for some people, Christmas is still a miserable time for them because they don’t know the Lord Jesus Christ. We would still be prisoners of our own sin and selfishness.
1 Corinthians 15:57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Jesus IS the reason for the season! And His first coming gives us cause for celebration. May I remind you that He is coming again!
