Summary: A biblical perspective on debt.

What Does the Bible Say About Debt? Here are a few Scriptures:

Proverbs 22:7

The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is the slave of the lender.

Romans 13:8

Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.

Psalm 37:21

The wicked borrows but does not pay back, but the righteous is generous and gives…

Romans 13:7

Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.

Luke 14:28

For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?

ANALYSIS

It seems almost impossible in our American Culture to live without some debt as the cost of life is too much. When I think of my life, I recall being encouraged to borrow money so I could get a college degree. There’s some debt. Years later, I was married and we could get an apartment but we wouldn’t make any money back on that (potentially) and my wife likes to make things and she wanted a “fixer - upper.” Some more debt. What about vehicles? We need those, for the most part to get back and forth to work, to the stores, to take our kids places, etc. There is some more debt.

TAKEAWAY

The truth is this: I don’t own some of the things that I have; my house, my car - I use them daily but they’re not mine. If I miss a payment, they could be taken away. What God wants from us is this: to know our money is ultimately HIS! He also wants us to be good stewards so that money isn’t controlling us and/or our behavior. We should see money, as a resource and tool that can and should be used for the benefit of BLESSING OTHERS!
