Summary: What is it we really hinger for and what should we really hunger for?

John 6:1-21 What are we hungering for?

1. What is it we hunger for especially when it comes to food?

• Typically we want something quick, easy and light on the pocketbook.

• McDonald’s and Burger King, chick flea.

• An article I read this week said, “Americans spend more money on fast food than on higher education, computers, computer software or new cars. In fact, according to Schlosser, we spend more on fast food than on movies, books, So, what are you hungry for?

• Maybe we hunger for accomplishment that gives us fulfillment

• An activity that gives one wholeness, basketball, reading, hobby

• Maybe we hunger for answers to life’s mysteries. The titanic, the Stonehenge, the holy grail, the ark of the covenant, space, The list could go on.

2. Today’s Gospel The gospel of John these folks hunger is not food as much as it is Jesus

• Jesus and the disciples are on a hilltop,

• There is a large crowd, it was a stadium full of people, lines of folks for as far as the eye could see, making their way to Jesus.

• Jesus Takes five loaves of bread and two fish, Jesus said to the disciples, “Make the people sit down”

• These folks hunger for Jesus. Jesus — who can walk on water, heal the sick, raise the dead and apparently calm not only the seas but my stomach.

3. These folks think Jesus is here to :

• Jesus the Savior is here to quench all our earthly cravings.

• John tells us the people were so moved by the miracle that they wanted to throw a crown on Jesus and anoint him as their earthly king right there, on the spot! Perhaps they were thinking, “Hey, with Jesus life will be one buffet of blessing!” We approach Jesus with the same attitude.

• Our lives are filled with cravings for things such as financial security, physical well-being and peaceful relationships.

4. WE have a hunger for stuff like health, wellbeing, security, and just stuff

• Heres what we really want or hunger for the picture-perfect family, a nice retirement and a long, healthy life.

• After we have gotten all we want we make our way to Jesus. To feel to make us feel better

• Bono, in the rock band U2 and a professed Christian, sums up our search for temporal deliverance in these hit lyrics: “I have climbed highest mountain, I have run through the fields … I have run, I have crawled, I have scaled these city walls. … But I still haven’t found what I’m looking for.” We are still not content

5. What do we really hunger for is Life as an ease but Jesus came to be the food we need

• John tells the people marveled at his miracles, but they misunderstood the message.

• Jesus didn’t come to help people get what they want. No, he came to be what we want.

• I must say, Jesus didn’t come to perfect our life; he came to lay down his life and take it back up again, as he himself said (John 10:18). His death and resurrection, is the meal that sustains our souls, bringing wholeness, healing and growth.

• When we come to Jesus, and for Jesus, we receive Jesus. When our souls are fed and filled by the work of Jesus, we may still go through seasons of illness, unemployment or even a lack of food. But one thing we will never, ever be is — empty.

• when we fill ourselves with Jesus, we find that many of our other cravings in life, such as a need for purpose and meaning, become satisfied,

• May we follow Jesus not so that he can meet our needs but rather knowing that he is all we need.

• In the words of the prophet Isaiah: Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare (Isaiah 55:2
