What About Sin?

October 13, 2019 Morning Service

Immanuel Baptist Church, Wagoner, OK

Rick Boyne

Message Point: If we are saved, what do we do about sin? We don’t obey it!

Focus Passage: Romans 6:12-15

Supplemental Passage: All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful, but not all things edify. (1 Corinthians 10:23 NASB)

Introduction: I used part of the video “Stop It” of Bob Newhart. You can search for that and decide what part to use, or use the whole clip. 6 minutes was too long for our church, so I used about 90 seconds of it, starting where he asks the patient to describe her problems. Relate that to sin and sin habits.

I. Don’t Obey Sin

a. THEREFORE, go back and look at vs 11. “Dead to sin; alive to God.”

b. Do not let or allow sin to reign or rule in our earthly body

c. Lust is a psychological force producing intense wanting or longing for an object, or circumstance fulfilling the emotion. Lust can take any form such as the lust for sexuality, love, money or power. It can take such mundane forms as the lust for food as distinct from the need for food. [Wikipedia]

II. (Because) Sin Is Not Your Master

a. Take a look at vs 16: “slaves for obedience”

b. You don’t HAVE to obey sin

c. You don’t HAVE to obey your lusts

d. Jesus has redeemed you; Jesus is your Master

e. Present yourself to God to be used for His good

III. Stop Sinning

a. Do we provide the opportunity for God to give us more grace? GOD FORBID! ( vs 15 KJV)

b. For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. But if I am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. (Romans 7:19-20)

c. "Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5:16 NASB)

Application/Invitation: What sin do you need to repent of? Do you need to just Stop It? Do you need to present yourself to God to be used for His righteousness?
