Summary: Short sermon based on 1 Timothy 3:8-13 that can be used for a deacon ordination service.
WHAT’S A DEACONS SUPPOSED TO BE?
1 Timothy 3:8-13
INTRO – “What is a deacon supposed to do?” Had a friend ask me that AFTER he had already been ordained as a deacon. Probably a good idea to know the answer BEFORE you get ordained!
Truth is that it’s more important that a deacon know what he is supposed to BE than what he’s supposed to DO.
5 things a deacon should be:
BE A FOLLOWER – A follower of Jesus, not of the pastor or a group of people.
BE A LEADER – “Leadership is the ability to hide your panic from others.”
- Must be a leader at home first & foremost – relationship to wife extremely important. Relationship to children important, too.
- Must be a leader at church – This is where the “DO” come in. Deacons lead by serving.
BE A SERVANT – Greek word literally means “table waiter.”
- Acts 6:1-7
BE A FRIEND – To the pastor, church staff, fellow deacons, fellow church members, lost people.
BE AN EXAMPLE – Philippians 3:17 – “Join w/ others in following my example…”
