Many of us work hard to remember things that matter to us. Birthdays, anniversaries, moments in time, people, pets, the list could go on and on. We do this because we know how fickle our memories can be. We often forget the things that matter to us. Not because we want to, not because we’re heartless, but simply because we’re human.
We need help remembering. And it’s been that way for a long, long time.
One of the most important things we do when we remember is to honor the past.
The word honor simply means to give great respect, to hold in high esteem. And when we look to the past we can see that there are countless individuals who’ve gone before us. Many of whom have sacrificed unimaginable things, including their very lives, so that we can enjoy and celebrate the freedoms we have. We honor their memory today and we are grateful for their sacrifice.
We also must remember to forgive our enemies and pray for those who’ve persecuted us in the past. In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus gives some very clear instruction about this very thing.
