We’re Going To The Other Side - Mk 4:33 - 5:1 ; Lk 8:22-26

Introduction: To the Pastors or teachers using this message. A couple of points to consider which will give you a better feel for the message.

First, Note I have brought out points from each of the gospel writers. This helps the listeners to understand the importance of seeing the story from each of the gospel writers views.

Secondly, I’ve tried to help the listeners understand that we can trust Jesus to lead us even when it may be through stormy situations.

Lastly, the most important thing to convey is that Jesus is leading us into the ministry of serving others...there are many bound souls which will remain so unless we weather our storms and follow Jesus all the way!

God bless you as you share these truths with God’s own.

Matt 8:18-9:1

16 Now when Jesus saw great multitudes about him, he gave commandment to depart unto the other side.

19 And a certain scribe came, and said unto him, Master, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.

20 And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.

21 And another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.

22 But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead.

23 And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followe

d him.

24 And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep.

25 And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish.

26 And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.

27 But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!

I. Commanded to go to the other side MT 8:18 “we are about our father’s business..”

A. Jesus didn’t give discourse on “why” they were going to the other side. Authority doesn’t always have to give all the answers..Parents

II. There were also other little ships MK 4:36 “we’re not alone”

A. We must not be so independent and suspicious of God’s “other” sheep. The Church is made up of a very diverse group of believers.

III. “As they sailed” LK 8:23...someone has to be taking care of the ship

A. Church may sometimes seem monotonous but “someone” has to be tending to the so called “mundane.” Jesus calls it being faithful in the “few” things. I personally call nothing that touches the King or His kingdom mundane or unimportant!

IV. There arose a great storm of wind Mk 4:37 LK 8:23

A. Mt. 8:24 the ship was covered with waves

B. Mk 4:37 the waves beat into the ship…it was now full

C. Lk 8:23 they were filled with water..and were in jeopardy

1. “But he was asleep” Mt. 8:24

2. “And he was in the hinder part asleep on a pillow” MK 4:37

3. “As they sailed he fell asleep” Lk 8:23

V. His disciples came and awoke him saying…Lord, save us we perish MT8:25

And they came to him and awoke him saying, “Master, Master we perish”

Lk 8:23

And they awake him and said… “carest thou not that we perish?” MK4:38

I. I’m not so sure they weren’t as afraid of the storm as they were of waking up Jesus.

A. I can see them now…You wake him…no you wake him….I’m not waking him…ok, ok, we’ll wake him together.

VI. And he said “Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith?”

Then he arose and rebuked the winds and the sea and there was a great Calm. Mt 8:26

And he arose and rebuked the wind and said unto the sea, “Peace be still, and the wind ceased, And he said unto them, “Why are ye so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” Mk 4:39,40

And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm. And he said to them, “Where is your faith?“Lk 8:24,25

A. Where is your Faith (ie. Trust)

1. I gave the command to pass over

2. I’m here with you…we would perish together

3. Don’t you know by now that I care?

4. Do I look nervous?

5. Don’t you know you won’t die before your time?

6. We’ve still got to get to the other side!
