Plan for: Thanksgiving | Advent | Christmas
Explores how, like Abraham, we should heed God's call, navigate life's uncertainties with faith, and cultivate gratitude for His divine guidance and grace.
Welcome, beloved family in Christ. We are gathered here today, in this sacred space, to commune with our Lord and to bask in the warmth of His divine message. We are here to share in the wisdom of His Word and to grow together in our understanding of His purpose for us.
Let's turn our hearts and minds to the profound words of Hebrews 11:8-10, "By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God."
Corrie ten Boom, once said, "Faith sees the invisible, believes the unbelievable, and receives the impossible." This quote, my dear friends, encapsulates the essence of our gathering today. Like Abraham, we are called to see the invisible hand of God in our lives, to believe in His unbelievable love for us, and to receive His impossible grace.
Before we begin, let's bow our heads in prayer. Dear Heavenly Father, we come before You today with open hearts and open minds. We thank You for Your Word, which guides us and nourishes us. As we study the life of Abraham, help us to see the invisible, believe the unbelievable, and receive the impossible. Guide us, Lord, as we heed Your call, hike the uncharted path, and harvest gratitude along the way. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Now, let us turn our attention to our first main point: Heeding God's Call.
Abraham was a man of ordinary means but extraordinary faith. He was called by God to leave his homeland and venture into the unknown. This was a complete upheaval of his life. Yet, Abraham obeyed. He listened to God's call and followed His directions, even when they didn't make sense to him. This is the essence of heeding God's call - it's about obedience, trust, and surrender.
Obedience is a fundamental aspect of our relationship with God. It's not just about following rules or avoiding wrongdoing. It's about aligning our will with God's will. It's about saying 'yes' to God, even when we don't fully understand His plans. Abraham didn't know where he was going, but he knew who was leading him. His obedience wasn't based on his understanding of the situation, but on his trust in God.
Trust is another crucial element in heeding God's call. It's about believing in God's goodness and faithfulness, even when circumstances seem to suggest otherwise. Abraham trusted God, even when he was asked to sacrifice his son, Isaac. He trusted that God would provide, and He did. Trusting God doesn't mean that we won't have doubts or fears. It means that we choose to believe in God's promises, even when our feelings or circumstances tell us otherwise.
Surrender is the final piece of the puzzle. We need to hold our plans, our desires, our control loosely. Abraham surrendered his life to God, and in doing so, he became the father of many nations. Surrendering to God doesn't mean that we lose our identity or our purpose. We find our true identity and purpose in Him.
We must strive for lifelong obedience. Abraham walked with God, day by day, step by step, trusting Him to lead us and guide us. We must let go of our plans and embrace His plans for us. Heeding God's call isn't always easy. It requires courage, faith, and perseverance. It often involves stepping out of our comfort zones and facing the unknown. But the rewards are immeasurable. Abraham's obedience, trust, and surrender led him to a life of blessing and promise. His story became a testament to God's faithfulness and grace.
Application questions. As we reflect on Abraham's story, let's ask ourselves: Are we willing to heed God's call? Are we willing to obey, trust, and surrender? Are we willing to step out in faith, even when we don't know where we're going? Are we willing to let go of our plans and embrace God's plans for us? Are we willing to find our purpose and our identity in Him?
Mistakes will happen. This isn't about achieving perfection or avoiding mistakes. It's about growing in our relationship with God. It's about learning to listen to His voice, to trust His promises, and to surrender our lives to Him. So, let's heed God's call. Let's obey, trust, and surrender. Let's walk with God, step by step, day by day. Let's find our purpose and our identity in Him. And let's remember that, like Abraham, we are called to be a blessing to others. We are called to share God's love and grace with the world. We are called to be His hands and feet, His voice and heart. We are called to be His people, living out His purpose for us.
