VIII. MAIN BODY:

A. We also rest from work when we entered GOD's rest

"For he who has once entered [God’s] rest also has ceased from [the weariness and pain] of human labors,"

Work came from the Greek word: "ergon" [noun neuter] meaning:

1. business, employment, that which any one is occupied

2. any product whatever, any thing accomplished by hand, art, industry, or mind

3. an act, deed, thing done: the idea of working is emphasised in opp. to that which is less than work

Works is referring to "good works", as based on the usage:

Being generous is letting our "light shine before men", and they'll see our good works. It's not the other way around. This world pretends to be good by doing "good works" and displaying it before men, but only GOD is good, so let GOD shine within our being. Good works are fruits or end results, not the means.

Matthew 5:16 (The Message)

5:16 Now that I've put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you'll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.

We no longer do good works to be saved, we do good works because we're already saved and it's what good people does because of GOD's goodness overflowing in their lives.

Ephesians 2:9 (The Message)

2:9 We don't play the major role. If we did, we'd probably go around bragging that we'd done the whole thing!

Colossians 3:17 (The Message)

3:17 Let every detail in your lives—words, actions, whatever—be done in the name of the Master, Jesus, thanking God the Father every step of the way.

Let everything be done, even the little details in our lives, let them be done in JESUS' Name.

B. Just as GOD rested

"just as God rested from those labors peculiarly His own"

Persistent and consistent quick obedience is what we do.

Hebrews 4:11 (The Message)

4:11 So let's keep at it and eventually arrive at the place of rest, not drop out through some sort of disobedience.

Hebrews 4:11 (Amplified Bible)

4:11 Let us therefore be zealous and exert ourselves and strive diligently to enter that rest [of God, to know and experience it for ourselves], that no one may fall or perish by the same kind of unbelief and disobedience [into which those in the wilderness fell].

Zealous or Labour means "to use speed", "to make effort", "be prompt or earnest", "be diligent". Without diligence in our part, we can't live a lifestyle of faith. Living a lifestyle of faith is not laziness but it's diligence.

Diligent means:

1. Steady in application to business; constant in effort or exertion to accomplish what is undertaken; assiduous; attentive; industrious; not idle or negligent; applied to persons

2. Steadily applied; prosecuted with care and constant effort; careful; assiduous; as, make diligent search.

IX. CONCLUSION:

Live out our days being free to pursue GOD's will in our lives.

1 Peter 4:1-2 (The Message)

4:1 Since Jesus went through everything you're going through and more, learn to think like him. Think of your sufferings as a weaning from that old sinful habit of always expecting to get your own way.

4:2 Then you'll be able to live out your days free to pursue what God wants instead of being tyrannized by what you want.
