Summary: Who are we? What is our identity?

Identity crisis is one of the biggest problems in today’s world. This personal problem spill over to the community and some times even in the community of believers. There is always a tussle to prove one is better than the other. Man becomes judgmental about others who are different from them or do things differently than them.

1. Our Identity (Psalm 100:3; Isaiah 43:1)

We are HIS. We belong to God who is the maker of Heaven and Earth. HE has set us aside and made us HIS own possession.

He knows us very personally – Psalm 139: 13-16 right before creation HE has known us. We are not born by accident or mistake. We are not born in the wrong family. HE knows everything and HE has made us in HIS full knowledge and wisdom.

2. We are HIS children.

John 1:12-13 - God assures us once we are saved, we become HIS children by adoption and it is not by the will or desires of man but of God. We don’t choose HIM as our Father but HE chooses us as HIS children.

Generally, every creation is HIS but only those who are saved by the blood of Jesus Christ becomes the sons and daughters of God.

Romans 8:15-16 – This unique and powerful relationship is felt by a strong conviction of the Holy Spirit who lives in us. We become God’s children not only by title, but we become HIS legitimate heirs.

Who is an heir? What does an heir inherits from the Father?

1 John 3:1-3

Vs. 2 – “we shall be like HIM” – like whom? God!! So, to be like HIM we need to be transformed in our characters and behavior here on this earth. This process is called sanctification.

Vs. 3 – John talks about our responsibility before we see HIM - “purifies Himself as HE is pure”

Now son-ship comes with responsibilities. Often time we want to enjoy the benefits of son-ship without fulfilling the responsibilities.

3. Purpose of our Calling

a. Ephesians 2: 10 – to do good works in this evil world. Good works in holistic sense.

b. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 – to glorify HIM in this self-seeking world.

c. 1 Peter 2:9 – To announce HIS greatness – to preach the Good news.
