WATER To WINE—Declaring God's Anointed-I—John 2:1-12

Attention:

On Stage—The Lion King—2nd highest grossing Broadway musical, pulling in $699.1 Million since 1994. Story of a coming of age reluctant King, threatened by his own uncle, who enviously seeks the king’s life so he can have the throne. A great human interest story, but absent of God’s truth.

The Broadway stage is used to preach much worldly 'philosophy'...a point of heralding worldly wisdom—usually of humanism &/or empty religion. .

On the Stage of our lives, Jesus continues to be heralded as God’s anointed.

Jesus turned water to wine in order to initiate/call attention to/set apart His public ministry.

Jesus is heralded as God’s Anointed.

*Where is Jesus heralded as God’s Anointed? or Why turn water into wine?

6 stages for heralding God’s Anointed.

INSIGNIFICANCE(:1)

Explanation:(:1)Cana of Galilee/Lack of Popularity/Not unknown yet not well-known/Insignificanct in the eyes of the world

:1—“On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, & the mother of Jesus was there.”

The third day after some event—possibly the Jewish delegation(1:19-28), but more probably “counted from the last event narrated”—there was “a wedding” which was important in the ministry of Jesus. It was in the town of Cana which was in Galilee. Cana is supposedly about 8 miles north(N, NW or NE) of Nazareth(possibly modern Khirbet Qana[?Kafar Kana?])—(DACarson/NAC/MNTC/BECNT).

John is possibly concerned with recounting these particular days chronologically because he is recalling the events leading up to & including the very first week of Jesus’ introduction to public ministry. After chapter 2 the specific time markers disappear(MNTC/BECNT).

Argumentation:

Deut. 7:6-8—“For you are a holy people to the LORD your God; the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples on the face of the earth. “The LORD did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any other people, for you were the least of all peoples; but because the LORD loves you, & because He would keep the oath which He swore to your fathers, the LORD has brought you out with a mighty hand, & redeemed you from the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

Micah 5:2—“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Though you are little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, From everlasting.”

Lk. 9:46-48—“Then a dispute arose among them as to which of them would be greatest. And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a little child & set him by Him, & said to them, “Whoever receives this little child in My name receives Me; & whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me. For he who is least among you all will be great.”

Lk. 14:11—“For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, & he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Mat. 23:11-12—“But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. “And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, & he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

1Cor. 1:20-31—“Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. For Jews request a sign, & Greeks seek after wisdom; but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block & to the Greeks foolishness, but to those who are called, both Jews & Greeks, Christ the power of God & the wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, & the weakness of God is stronger than men. For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, & God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; & the base things of the world & the things which are despised God has chosen, & the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, that no flesh should glory in His presence. But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God--& righteousness & sanctification & redemption-- that, as it is written, “He who glories, let him glory in the LORD.”

2Cor. 12:9-10—“And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”
