Series: Jesus- Son Of Man [#62]

WATCH AND BE READY

Luke 17:20-37

Introduction:

Today, Jesus reminds us in Luke 17:20-37 that His return is imminent, but it will come unexpectedly- Like lightning flashing across the sky or how people were caught up in their daily routines during Noah’s and Lot’s time. It’s easy to get distracted by life’s busyness, (work, social media, worries) and forget that a divine moment is just beyond our awareness. The real question is- Are we truly prepared for that moment, or are we living as if there’s always more time? This passage challenges us to examine whether we are living with a constant sense of readiness, aware that Jesus’ coming will be sudden, like a thief in the night, and that it will be too late once it happens.

Ultimately, this is a call to align our lives and priorities with His purpose. Living in anticipation of Jesus’ return isn’t about fear but about love and devotion- Staying spiritually awake and intentional every day. It’s about cultivating a sense of urgency to live rightly, so that when He comes again, we will be found faithful and prepared. Now is the time to stay vigilant, keep our hearts open, and fix our eyes on the promise of His glorious return. Let’s live with purpose, living each day as if Jesus could come back at any moment.

Luke 17:20-25

Be ready…

1. For Christ’s unexpected arrival.

Living in a World full of surprises, it’s easy to get caught up in the idea that we can predict or control when things will happen; but Jesus reminds us that His return will be like lightning- Sudden, bright, and impossible to miss, yet also completely unexpected. This means that true readiness isn’t about waiting for signs or trying to predict the future; it’s about cultivating a daily relationship with Him so deep that we’re always spiritually prepared. It’s a mindset of living with open hearts, staying connected to God, and making sure our lives reflect His Kingdom here and now, so that when He comes, we’re not caught off guard.

At the same time, Jesus teaches us that the Kingdom of God is already present in our lives- His reign in our hearts and communities; but there's still a future fulfillment we eagerly await. This double reality challenges us to live with both confidence and anticipation. We experience His presence today, yet we also long for the full realization of His promises. Understanding this helps us stay grounded, knowing that our daily choices matter. We’re called to live with an urgent sense of purpose, (seeking to grow closer to Jesus, forgiving others, and living out His love in practical ways) because we never know when He might return.

Ultimately, being ready means making a conscious decision to live each day with vigilance. It’s not about perfection, but about consistently choosing obedience, humility, and trust in His timing. The truth is, His return could happen at any moment, and that should motivate us to live intentionally- Prioritizing eternal values over temporary distractions. Our goal isn’t just to prepare for that one day, but to develop a lifestyle of watchfulness, so that when Jesus comes, we’re awake, alert, and fully living in the hope of His glorious return.

Luke 17:26-30

Be ready…

2. To discern the signs of the times.

Discerning the signs of the times isn’t just about noticing current events or societal changes; it’s about developing a spiritual awareness guided by the Holy Spirit. In today’s fast-paced World, it’s easy to get caught up in the busyness and distractions of life, losing sight of what’s really happening beneath the surface. God invites us to stay connected to Him daily, (through prayer, reading His Word, and listening to His Spirit) so we can recognize the subtle warnings and signals that point to Jesus’ return. Discerning these signs is an act of spiritual wisdom that helps us see beyond the chaos and understand what God is doing in history and in our lives.

The signs of the times, (like moral decline, natural disasters, or societal unrest) are not just indicators of impending judgment; they are also opportunities for us to respond. They remind us that God is patient, giving people time to turn back to Him. When we see these signs, we should view them as invitations to repent, to get our hearts right with God, and to share His love with others. Ignoring these signals can lead to complacency, making us spiritually blind or indifferent. Instead, recognizing the signs with spiritual discernment awakens us to live intentionally, knowing that Jesus’ return could happen at any moment.

Ultimately, the signs point us to a deeper trust in God’s sovereignty and faithfulness. They remind us that God’s plans are perfect, and His timing is always right. While these signs signal that Jesus is coming back soon, they also challenge us to live with a kingdom mindset- Prioritizing eternal values over temporary pleasures. Discerning the times calls us to live with purpose, urgency, and faithfulness, sharing the Gospel and building God’s Kingdom today, because we know that Jesus’ return is the ultimate fulfillment of God’s promises. Let’s stay alert, spiritually awake, and ready for His coming.
