Virgin Birth – Myth or Reality?

Introduction: The Bible says Jesus was born of Virgin Mary. Was Jesus really born to a virgin or was Jesus born out of an illegitimate relationship out of wedlock? Did the first century Christians try to cover up the story of their saviour with the idea of a virgin birth? Does other God’s of this world too also claim to have had a virgin birth?

Subject: Virgin Birth – Myth or Reality? Series: Miracles of Jesus

Scripture: Luke 1:26-38 & Matthew 1:18-24

HF: This Sunday we are going to see from various angles of the proof of the virgin birth of Jesus Christ. We are also going to see how exactly that birth could have happened.

I want to start by telling you that there are other God’s of this world who claim to have had a virgin birth. Many deities among Greeks, Babylonians, Egyptians, and India were reported to be born in an unusual manner by a virgin birth. I will explain 2 of them.

The birth of Zoroaster: Zoroaster was the greatest prophet among the ancient Iranians. He took his birth in order to establish the worship of Ahura Mazda, the Supreme Lord of the Universe. The birth of Zoroaster was miraculous. The glory of Ahura Mazda descended from heaven and entered the house of the future mother of the prophet. When she was pregnant, archangels came to her and worshipped and praised the unborn child.

The birth of hanuman: When Agni, the god of fire, gave Dasharath, the king of Ayodhya, a bowl of sacred dessert to share among his wives so they may have divine children, an eagle snatched a part of the pudding and dropped it where Anjana was meditating, and Pavana, the god of wind delivered the drop to her outstretched hands. After she took the divine dessert, she gave birth to Hanuman. Thus Shiva incarnated as a monkey, and was born as Hanuman to Anjana, by the blessings of Pavana, who thus became Hanuman’s godfather.

If the worldly gods claim to be born of a virgin how is Jesus different?

The worldly gods do not have any historic and archeological proof of existence. They have their sacred writings but no proof of validity or authenticity. Such stories are called myths.

Jesus was a true man in history and there are historic and archeological proofs of His existence. Moreover, the Bible which speaks of Jesus is a true and living book with parallels from the world history. The Bible itself testifies that it is a true book.

2 Peter 1:16(AMP) 16For we were not following cleverly devised stories when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah), but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty (grandeur, authority of sovereign power).

(KJV) 16For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

The Bible is a true book and every account in the Bible is nothing but the truth.

Let us see what the Bible says about the virgin birth of Jesus Christ.

New Testament

Luke 1:26-38

26In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28The angel went to her and said, "Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you."

29Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. 31You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. 32He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end."

34"How will this be," Mary asked the angel, "since I am a virgin?"

35The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. 36Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. 37For nothing is impossible with God."

38"I am the Lord’s servant," Mary answered. "May it be to me as you have said." Then the angel left her. This is the account of Luke about the birth of Jesus.
