INTRODUCTION:
The fear of death is one of humanity’s greatest torments. Throughout history, people have searched for ways to escape death’s power; through medicine, wealth, or philosophy but none could provide true freedom. Death was the ultimate weapon of Satan, holding mankind in bondage and despair.
However, in His infinite love, Jesus took on flesh and blood to share in our humanity. He did not remain distant but entered our world to confront death head-on. On the cross, He dealt a fatal blow to the enemy, and by His resurrection, He opened the door to eternal life for all who believe.
Today, every believer can live without fear, knowing that Jesus has conquered death and stripped the devil of his authority. Our hope is not in this world but in the One who holds the keys of death and Hades. This truth gives us courage, peace, and a victorious life.
1. JESUS SHARED IN OUR HUMANITY TO BRING DELIVERANCE
Christ willingly became like us so that He could redeem us.
a) THE INCARNATION WAS GOD’S STRATEGY (John 1:14)
Jesus became flesh to experience what we experience, to fully identify with us in weakness and suffering. His humanity qualified Him to be our perfect Saviour.
b) HIS DEATH WAS A DIVINE EXCHANGE (2 Corinthians 5:21)
By His death, He took our sin and gave us His righteousness, exchanging our bondage for freedom.
c) HE BROKE SATAN’S POWER THROUGH THE CROSS (Colossians 2:15)
Jesus disarmed principalities and powers, triumphing over them publicly.
d) HIS VICTORY IS OUR VICTORY (Romans 8:37)
Believers now walk in the authority of Christ, free from fear and oppression.
Biblical Example: Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead (John 11:43-44) to show His power over death even before His own resurrection.
2. JESUS DESTROYED THE DEVIL’S HOLD OVER DEATH
The devil’s greatest weapon was death, but Jesus rendered him powerless.
a) SATAN LOST HIS AUTHORITY (Revelation 1:18)
Jesus holds the keys of death and Hades—Satan no longer controls life and death.
b) THE CROSS WAS THE TURNING POINT (John 19:30)
When Jesus declared, “It is finished,” the devil’s plan was defeated.
c) FEAR OF DEATH IS BROKEN FOR BELIEVERS (2 Timothy 1:10)
Jesus abolished death and brought life and immortality to light.
d) WE CAN NOW FACE DEATH WITH HOPE (Philippians 1:21)
To die is gain because it ushers us into the presence of Christ.
Biblical Example: Stephen, the first Christian martyr (Acts 7:55-60), faced death with boldness and peace, seeing Jesus standing at the right hand of God.
3. BELIEVERS ARE CALLED TO LIVE FEARLESSLY AND VICTORIOUSLY
Because of Jesus’ victory, we are no longer slaves to fear.
a) FEAR IS REPLACED WITH FAITH (Romans 8:15)
We are adopted as children of God and no longer bound by the spirit of fear.
b) SUFFERING IS TEMPORARY, GLORY IS ETERNAL (2 Corinthians 4:17)
Our trials are momentary compared to the eternal glory awaiting us.
c) DEATH HAS LOST ITS STING (1 Corinthians 15:54-57)
We can rejoice even in the face of death because victory is assured.
d) WE ARE MORE THAN CONQUERORS (Romans 8:37-39)
Nothing—neither death nor life—can separate us from God’s love.
Biblical Example: Paul the Apostle faced persecution, imprisonment, and the threat of death with unwavering faith, declaring, “For me to live is Christ and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21).
CONCLUSION:
The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ are not mere historical events—they are the foundation of our victory. Through His sacrifice, death has been defeated, and the devil’s power has been broken. The fear that once enslaved humanity has been replaced by the glorious hope of eternal life.
Let us live each day with courage and faith, unshaken by the uncertainties of life or the reality of death. Because Jesus lives, we too shall live, and nothing can separate us from His love.
