Explore the power of the shield of faith as described in Ephesians 6:16, emphasizing its role in protecting us from the attacks of the enemy and the assurance it provides.

Introduction

Good morning, church! Today, we're going to dive into a passage from Ephesians that speaks directly to our spiritual armor and the power of faith. Our focus will be Ephesians 6:16, which reads,

"In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one."

As C.S. Lewis once said, "Faith is the art of holding on to things your reason has once accepted, in spite of your changing moods." That's the kind of faith we'll be talking about today – the kind that holds on, that stands firm, that serves as a shield against the attacks of the enemy.

Let's pray:

Lord, as we explore Your Word today, open our hearts and minds to fully understand the power of the shield of faith. Help us to grasp the assurance You've given us that, when we're equipped with Your armor, the flaming arrows of the enemy can't touch us. We ask for Your guidance and Your wisdom as we delve into Your Word. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

So, let's get started, shall we?

The Power of the Shield of Faith

This verse tells us that our faith is not just a passive belief or a simple acceptance of certain truths. No, our faith is a shield – a protective barrier that we can actively use to defend ourselves against the attacks of the enemy.

In the ancient world, a shield was a soldier's primary defensive weapon. It was the tool that protected him from the enemy's arrows, swords, and spears. It was the soldier's first line of defense. Similarly, our faith is our first line of defense against the attacks of the enemy. It's the protective barrier that guards our hearts and minds against doubt, fear, and temptation.

It doesn't stop there. Ephesians 6:16 tells us that our faith can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. This is an incredible promise! It means that no matter how fiery the enemy's attacks may be, they can't harm us when we're equipped with the shield of faith. Our faith has the power to quench these attacks, to put out their flames, and to render them harmless.

This is a powerful image. Our faith is not a passive thing. It's not just something we have; it's something we use. It's a tool, a weapon, a shield that we actively wield in our spiritual battles. And when we use it, when we hold it up in faith, it has the power to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.

It's not our own power. It's God's power. It's the power of His truth, His promises, and His presence in our lives. When we hold up the shield of faith, we're not just declaring our belief in God; we're declaring our dependence on Him. We're acknowledging that He is our protector, our defender, our deliverer.

This is where the power really shines. Because when we depend on God, when we trust in His promises and rely on His protection, we can stand firm against the enemy's attacks. We can face our fears, resist our temptations, and overcome our doubts. Not because of our own strength or wisdom, but because of God's power working in and through us.

It's not just about defense. It's also about victory. Because when we use our faith as a shield, we're not just surviving the enemy's attacks; we're overcoming them. We're not just enduring the battle; we're winning it. And that's a powerful promise that can give us confidence and courage in our spiritual journey.

Pastor, here would be a good place to share a personal story about the power of the shield of faith in your own life.
