This sermon explores the prophecy of Jesus in Isaiah 9:6, emphasizing His roles as our King, Savior, and the ultimate source of everything we need.

Introduction

Hey there, church family! Isn't it a blessing to be gathered together today, whether in person or online, ready to dig into God's word? It's always an incredible privilege to spend this time together, seeking to understand more about who God is and what He's done for us.

Today, we're going to be looking at a passage that's often read around Christmas, but it's so rich and full of truth that it's worth studying any time of year. We're talking about Isaiah 9:6: "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."

Isn't that just an amazing verse? It's a prophecy, a promise, about Jesus, hundreds of years before He was even born. And it's not just about His birth. It's about His life, His reign, His kingdom. It's about who He is and what He came to do.

We're going to break this verse down into three main points: The Coming of the King, The Claims of the King, and The Crowning of the King. We're going to look at what it means that Jesus came, what He claimed about Himself, and how He is crowned as our King.

Before we get started, I want to share a quote with you from A.W. Tozer, a great Christian author and pastor who said, "The sovereign God wants to be loved for Himself and honored for Himself, but that is only part of what He wants. The other part is that He wants us to know that when we have Him, we have everything - we have all the rest."

Isn't that just perfect for what we're talking about today? When we have Jesus, our King, we have everything. We don't need to look anywhere else for what we need.

So let's pray together as we start our study today. Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for this day, for the opportunity to gather together and study Your word. We thank you for Jesus, our King, who came to us as a child, who claimed to be our Savior, and who is crowned with glory and honor. As we study Your word today, open our hearts and minds to understand more about who You are and what You've done for us. Help us to love You more and to honor You in all that we do. In Jesus' name, we pray, amen.

The Coming of the King

In the book of Isaiah, we find a prophecy that speaks of a child being born to us. This isn't just any child. This is a child who will carry the government on His shoulders. This child is our King. His coming was foretold hundreds of years before His birth.

This prophecy was given in a time of darkness and despair. The people were longing for a savior, a leader, someone who could rescue them from their circumstances. And here, in the midst of their longing, comes this promise. A child is born. A son is given. The government will rest on His shoulders.

What does it mean that this child will carry the government on His shoulders? It means that He will bear the weight of leadership. He will be the one to guide and direct, to rule and reign. He will have authority and power. He will be responsible for His people. This is a leadership marked by wisdom and understanding, by counsel and might, by knowledge and the fear of the Lord. This is a leadership that brings peace and justice, righteousness and faithfulness. This is the leadership of our King.

And who is this King? He is the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. These are not just titles. They are descriptions of who He is and what He does. As the Wonderful Counselor, He gives wisdom and guidance. He understands our struggles and our needs. He knows what is best for us and He leads us in the right direction. He is the one we can turn to for advice and direction, for comfort and help.
