Plan for: Thanksgiving | Advent | Christmas
This sermon explores the profound significance of Jesus' birth as the fulfillment of God's prophetic promise and its transformative power in our lives.
Good morning, dear family of God. There is a warmth in the air, not just from the heat of the summer sun, but from the love that permeates this gathering, a love that is not of our own creation but a gift from our Heavenly Father. This sacred fellowship, this communion of saints, is a testament to the transformative power of God's love in our lives.
As we gather here today, we stand on the precipice of a profound revelation, a revelation that has the power to change our lives, to change the world. We are here to delve into the heart of the Christmas story, to unwrap the gift of the Savior's birth, and to discover the profound implications it holds for us today.
Our Scripture for today comes from the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 2, verse 11: "For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord." These words, spoken by an angel to the shepherds in the fields outside Bethlehem, herald the birth of our Savior, the fulfillment of God's promise to His people.
The birth of Jesus Christ was the culmination of a series of prophecies that had been spoken throughout the ages. The Old Testament is filled with these prophecies, foretelling the coming of a Messiah, a Savior who would redeem His people. The fulfillment of these prophecies in the birth of Jesus Christ is a testament to the faithfulness of God, a demonstration of His unchanging nature and His unwavering commitment to His people.
The prophecy of the birth of Jesus Christ can be traced back to Genesis 3:15. After Adam and Eve had sinned, God spoke to the serpent and said, "I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel." This is often referred to as the protoevangelium, or the first gospel, as it is the first mention of a Savior who would come to defeat sin and death.
Fast forward to the book of Isaiah, where we find one of the most well-known prophecies about the coming Messiah. In Isaiah 7:14, the prophet Isaiah says, "Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel." This prophecy was fulfilled in the birth of Jesus Christ, born of the virgin Mary, and referred to as Immanuel, which means "God with us."
The prophet Micah also prophesied about the birth of Jesus Christ in Micah 5:2. The LORD says, "But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times." This prophecy not only foretold the birth of Jesus Christ, but also specified the place of His birth, Bethlehem.
The fulfillment of these prophecies in the birth of Jesus Christ is a testament to the faithfulness of God. It shows us that God is true to His word, that He keeps His promises, and that He has a plan for the redemption of His people.
