A comprehensive guide to the Lord's Supper, its origins, and its significance in today's world. The sermon also discusses why it is not suitable for young children and those with sin in their hearts to partake in it.

Introduction

Today is the first Sunday of the month, and we will be observing the Lord's Supper. It is important for us to understand what the Lord's Supper is, where it comes from, and how we are supposed to partake in it.

The Roots of the Lord's Supper

The Lord's Supper has its roots in the Passover meal that the ancient Israelites celebrated. The Israelites were enslaved in Egypt for over 400 years, and they cried out to God for deliverance. God heard their cries and began the process of freeing them from slavery. As part of their liberation, God instructed them to eat a special meal, known as the Passover, which commemorated their deliverance from Egypt. He also commanded them to observe this meal annually as a reminder of what He had done for them.

Jesus' Institution of the Lord's Supper

Fast forward to Jesus' time in Jerusalem. He gathered with His disciples to celebrate the Passover meal, but He gave it a new meaning. Jesus took a loaf of bread, gave thanks to God, broke it, and passed it to His disciples. He told them that the bread represented His body, which would be given for them. He instructed them to eat the bread in remembrance of Him.

Afterward, Jesus took a cup of wine, gave thanks, and passed it to His disciples. He said that the cup represented the new covenant between God and His people, sealed by His shed blood. He told them to drink from the cup in remembrance of Him.

The Significance of the Lord's Supper

Since then, Christians have observed the Lord's Supper as a way to remember and honor Jesus' sacrifice for us. It is one of the two ordinances that Jesus commanded us to observe, along with baptism.

When we partake in the Lord's Supper, we are not just going through a ritual or tradition. It is an opportunity for us to worship Jesus by remembering what He has done for us. We remember that He left heaven to be born as a human, that He became poor so that we might become rich, that He bore our sins on the cross, that He shed His blood for our redemption, that He conquered death, and that He ascended back to heaven.

It is also a time for self-reflection. Before partaking in the Lord's Supper, we should examine our hearts and make sure there is no sin or unforgiveness in our lives. If there is, we should not partake until we have dealt with it. Taking the Lord's Supper with sin in our hearts is a serious matter and can lead to negative consequences.

The Lord's Supper is also a time for personal declaration. It is an opportunity for us to publicly declare our faith in Jesus and our dependence on His sacrifice. It is a time to identify ourselves with Him and His work on the cross.

Conclusion

As we partake in the Lord's Supper today, let us remember Jesus Christ and all that He has done for us. Let us approach this meal with hearts that are focused on Him and free from sin. May this time of worship and remembrance draw us closer to Him and strengthen our faith.

Now, let us take the emblems together as a family, holding them in our hands until everyone is served. As we partake, let us remember the words of Jesus: "This bread represents my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." And as we drink from the cup, let us remember His words: "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you."

Let us close this time in prayer, thanking God for His love and sacrifice, and asking Him to help us live in a way that honors and glorifies Him.
