The First Word uttered from the Cross? 1.) Father 2.) Forgive 3.) They Don't Know what They are Doing
Close your eyes and imagine the scene: the sand in the air, the crowd shouting for Barabas, the soldiers escorting Jesus to Calvary, the sound of nails being driven into His hands and feet. In the midst of this agony, Jesus utters His first words from the Cross. Can you hear them? "Father, forgive them; they do not know what they are doing." Let's explore the significance of these words.
Despite His exhaustion and suffering, Jesus addresses God as "Father." This shows His unwavering faith and trust in God, even in the face of extreme pain. Jesus had a habit of withdrawing to pray, seeking solitude to connect with God. Even on the Cross, He remains in communion with His Father.
Remarkably, Jesus' first prayer from the Cross is not for Himself but for others. He prays for those responsible for His pain, asking God to forgive them. Instead of cursing or seeking revenge, Jesus demonstrates forgiveness. He sets an example for us to follow, urging us to forgive others who have wronged us.
Jesus prays for His enemies because they do not understand the magnitude of their actions. He recognizes that they are unaware of who they are dealing with. Sinners often act without realizing the consequences of their choices. Jesus intercedes on their behalf, pleading for their forgiveness.
Jesus' first words from the Cross teach us valuable lessons. Despite His suffering, He remains connected to God and prays for others. He forgives those who have wronged Him, showing us the power of forgiveness. Jesus intercedes for sinners because they do not fully comprehend their actions. Let us follow His example, forgiving others and seeking God's guidance in our lives.
In light of Jesus' example, let us reflect on our own lives. Are there people we need to forgive? Are there areas where we need to seek God's forgiveness? Jesus loves us unconditionally and intercedes on our behalf. Let us respond to His love and forgiveness by extending the same to others.
