Summary: What separates becoming a voice of the Lord from being mere noise is Wilderness. Preacher without wilderness experience produce lot of noise whereas preachers with wilderness experience produce the voice of the Lord.
These days, pulpits are filled with lot of called unbroken preachers who lack the wilderness experience. These unbroken preachers are making a lot of noise. There's a lot of boasting, hype, and selfish ambition. Their preaching lacks the voice of the Lord. Preachers with wilderness experience produce the voice of the Lord, whereas preachers without wilderness experience make a lot of noise. The voice of the Lord is sweet and soothing to the soul and heart. The noise causes a lot of confusion, whereas the voice of the Lord brings peace and joy.
Preachers who have no wilderness experience are like caterpillars trying to fly without transforming into butterflies. They are called to be preachers, yet they begin before God's time (in their lives) and preparation. Wilderness is where caterpillars mature into butterflies. They shed their self-coating and are covered in the colours of God's righteousness, and once mature, they begin to fly on the wings of God's mercy.
John the Baptist was a voice of the Lord in his generation prepared in the wilderness. The Lord trained him in the wilderness for 30 years to become a voice of the Lord. The Lord trained him in every aspect, from the food he eats, speech, lifestyle, words to speak, and proper dependency on God. He was trained by the Lord to rightly use His words, no manipulation, no man-pleasing and no misuse of words. He used his words wisely and no words were in vain. We can know whether a preacher is trained by the Lord by how rightly he uses his words and the fear of God.
After the wilderness experience, every word he spoke had piercing effect on the people and people repented to their sins instantly. His preaching had a characteristic of bringing a profound fear and reverence for God while exposing sins that led to instant repentance. It brought a great sense fear of God and reverence to God. Even the hardest hearts were broken by the words of John the Baptist. His words had the authority to break all peaks, mountains and stubbornness in the hearts of people and led them to repentance. A sinner cannot continue to live in sin after he heard John the Baptist spoke. The voice of the Lord through John had a piercing, permanent effect on the sin and sinners’ heart. People instantly repented of their sins and came to be baptized. He did no miracles or signs, but people flocked to hear him. He did not perform any physical healings, but he healed all the wickedness of the heart.
Where are preachers like John the Baptist these days? Where are preachers who speak the truth, convict the sins of people and lead them to repentance? Where are the preachers who, through their sermons, bring a great fear and reverence for God? People who heard John speak were instantly convicted and a great sense of fear of God came upon them. People who lived with indwelling sin instantly repented. Truth was radiating from John’s words. Even the ruler of the nation was impacted by the words of John. The voice of the Lord created a ripple in the land and exposed all hidden sins in the light of God.
What separates becoming a voice of the Lord from being mere noise is Wilderness. Preacher without wilderness experience produce lot of noise whereas preachers with wilderness experience produce the voice of the Lord. Preachers are prepared and trained by God (in the wilderness) until they lose their own self voice and gain the voice of the Lord. Brokenness and wilderness are the methods which God uses to prepare his chosen vessels.
These days lot of preachers are preaching without the wilderness experience, resulting in a lot of noise, boasting, hype and a lack of fear of God. Preachers with wilderness experience, use their words wisely and know that they are accountable (on the judgment day) for every word they speak. They always speak words with the fear of God. Ask God to let you to become the voice of the Lord with the wilderness experience.
Although John the Baptist preached for only six months while spending around 30 years in the wilderness, his ministry had a lifelong impact on Israel and ushered the first coming of Jesus. This generation needs lot of people who have prolonged wilderness experience who can usher the second coming of Jesus. If the wilderness is a for prolonged time, God has a greater calling prepared for you.
God is bringing forth a season where lot of called preachers who don’t have a wilderness experience to enter a wilderness experience. In the wilderness experience, God is transforming them to become vessels that produce the voice of the Lord. He is changing them from being vessels of noise into vessels that produce the Lord's voice. God is training their mouths and hearts to speak words in tune(alignment) with him. There will be no more vain talk and boasting in the pulpits. God is restoring the standard of his pulpits, and there will be only the voice of the Lord which will be heard in his pulpits.
