Summary: This is the 7th Sermon from Genesis about the life of Abraham, "Called To Promise".
Series: Called To Promise [#7]
TRUSTING GOD IN THE DESERT
Genesis 16:1-16
Introduction:
Life often leads us into barren and challenging places, moments when our resources are depleted, hope seems distant, and the path forward is unclear. In these desert experiences, it can be difficult to see God's purpose or to feel His presence, and we may be tempted to rely on our own understanding rather than trusting in His divine plan. The story of Hagar vividly illustrates this reality- A woman facing despair and uncertainty yet encountering God's grace and reassurance in the midst of her desert.
We will explore how Hagar’s journey teaches us to depend on God's sovereignty even when circumstances seem harsh and hopeless. Her encounter with the Lord at the well reveals that God's presence is not limited by our circumstances and that He is always attentive to our needs, even in the most desolate moments. As we delve into this passage, we will discover how trusting God in our own deserts can lead us to new hope, renewed faith, and a deeper understanding of His unwavering faithfulness.
Genesis 16:1-2
Trust God to…
1. Provide His promises in uncertain times.
We see Sarai’s impatience and doubt about God's promise of a son, leading her to suggest Hagar as a substitute to fulfill God's promise through her own means. This passage reminds us that during uncertain times, our tendency may be to rely on our own understanding or plans rather than trusting God's timing and promises. Theologically, this highlights the faithfulness of God who, despite human doubt and impatience, remains committed to His covenant and promises. God's promise to Abram and Sarai was unwavering, even when human circumstances seemed impossible. Our trust in God is rooted in His character as the faithful Creator who keeps His word, even when the fulfillment appears delayed or uncertain. We are called to remember that God's promises are sure, and He works through delays and difficulties to bring about His perfect plan.
This passage challenges believers to trust God's sovereignty and His timing in the midst of life's deserts, (those dry, uncertain seasons where God's promises may seem distant or forgotten). Just as God remained faithful to His promise to give Abram and Sarai a son, He remains faithful to us today. Our role is to trust that God’s promises are rooted in His unchanging nature and His covenant love. When faced with uncertainty, we are encouraged to lean into God's promises instead of succumbing to despair or human attempts to force His hand. Trusting God means believing that He is actively working behind the scenes, even when we cannot see it, and that His promises will be fulfilled in His perfect time and way.
Genesis 16:3-6

2. Guide when human plans fall short.
We see Sarai and Abram taking matters into their own hands when God's promise of a son seemed delayed. Sarai's decision to give her maid, Hagar, to Abram was born out of doubt and a desire to control the situation, but it ultimately led to conflict and distress. This passage teaches us that when human plans are driven by impatience or lack of trust, they often lead to complications and suffering. Theologically, it reminds us that God's guidance is perfect and sufficient; human attempts to orchestrate God's promises can fall short and produce chaos. Trusting God means acknowledging His sovereignty, even when our plans seem to falter or when His timing appears delayed. God’s guidance is reliable, and He is able to redirect our paths back to His perfect plan, even from the mess of our own making.
This story underscores the importance of relying on God's wisdom rather than our limited understanding. It challenges believers to surrender their plans and trust in God's divine guidance, especially during times of uncertainty or disappointment. Theologically, it affirms that God's promises are trustworthy and that He can work through our failures to accomplish His purposes. When human plans fall short, God's guiding hand remains steadfast- Leading us through the desert of our doubts and mistakes toward His intended destination. Trusting God in these moments requires humility and faith, trusting that His guidance is always better than our own efforts and that His plans for us are ultimately for our good and His glory.
Genesis 16:7-8

3. See you in your hidden moments.
Trusting God to see you in your hidden moments requires a deep reliance on His presence even when we feel unseen or forgotten. Hagar’s encounter with the Lord in her desert experience exemplifies how God is present in our most vulnerable and hidden moments. When Hagar fled into the wilderness, feeling abandoned and overwhelmed, God revealed Himself to her by name, demonstrating that she was not alone. This teaches us that trusting God means believing He is present even when our circumstances conceal His presence, and that He sees us in our quiet, concealed struggles. Our hidden moments, (those times of loneliness, despair, or uncertainty) are opportunities for us to encounter God's grace and reassurance, reminding us that His sight and care extend beyond what is visible to the eye.
