Trusting Christ, Part 1

Isaiah 55:6-13

Introduction

- Turn in your bibles to Isaiah, the 55th chapter

- This morning we are going to kick off a new sermon series regarding TRUST

-- It is something that each believer has to come to grips with

-- Trust is something that is lived out in your faith; it says a lot about you

- Trust is defined as “a firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something.”

- When you trust in something:

-- You give it every benefit of the doubt

-- You allow it to provide you with guidance and advice

-- You implement the things you’ve been taught to change your life

-- You don’t spend your time questioning “what it all means”

- When your trust is firmly rooted in the Word of the Lord, your life reflects it

- Trusting the Word’s revelation of Christ IS the bottom line direction

- APP: We won’t get everything perfect; but we know where to find perfection

- Set up with some commentary of the beginning of this chapter (v1-5)

- Matthew Henry writes, “All are welcome to the blessings of salvation, to whom those blessings are welcome. In Christ there is enough for all, and enough for each. Those satisfied with the world that see no need of Christ, do not thirst. They are in no uneasiness about their souls: but where God gives grace, he gives a thirst after it; and where he has given a thirst after it, he will give it. Come to Christ, for he is the Fountain …”

- John 7:37 says, “In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.”

- Isaiah’s description of why we need the Lord is remarkable here

- It’s a lesson for each of us to learn, to apply and to stand on; but there’s MORE!

- Stand and read Isaiah 55:6-13

- Pray

Point 1 – We don’t have forever (6-7)

- Pay attention to the TWO commands:

-- Seek the Lord WHILE (Greek = kairos)…

-- Call on Him WHILE …

- There will be a time you cannot seek/call

- Matthew 7:7, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”

- Forsake what you currently do; turn to God!

-- God alone brings mercy

-- Joel 2:12-14, “12 “Even now,” declares the LORD, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.” Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and compassionate,

slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity. Who knows? He may turn and relent and leave behind a blessing— grain offerings and drink offerings for the LORD your God.”

Point 2 – We are not God’s equal (8-9)

- God plainly tells us this truth

-- He lives in the Heavens; not our domain

-- “What is man that you are mindful of him?” (Psalm 8:4)

- Trust in who He is; not who you are

-- John 3:30, “He must increase, but I must decrease.”

-- He is the great I Am (Moses needed credibility; “tell them I Am” sent you!)

- Mankind’s pride blurs this routinely

-- Proverbs 16:18-19, “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. Better to be lowly in spirit along with the oppressed than to share plunder with the proud.”

- Satan had the same problem

-- Isaiah 14:12-15, “How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations!

You said in your heart, “I will ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of Mount Zaphon. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.” But you are brought down to the realm of the dead, to the depths of the pit.” (Satan said he would be greater than God)

-- Result: Isaiah 14:22, “I will rise up against them,” declares the LORD almighty. “I will wipe out Babylon’s name and survivors, her offspring and descendants,” declares the LORD.” (Babylon was known for its wickedness and evil acts)

Point 3 – God’s ways are eternal (10-13)

- Reaping leads to sowing

-- Galatians 6:7-10, “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.”
