This sermon explores the importance of trusting in God's wisdom and guidance, rather than relying on our own understanding and desires.

Introduction

Good morning, friends.

We gather here today, hearts open, minds eager. We're here to talk about trust. Trust in God. A simple phrase. A big idea. It's not always easy. Sometimes, it's the hardest thing we can do. But it's important. It's vital.

G.K. Chesterton once said, "The riddles of God are more satisfying than the solutions of man." Isn't that true? We try to solve our own riddles. We try to find our own way. But God's way is better. His riddles, His plans, His wisdom. They're more satisfying. They're more fulfilling.

Let's look at the words from Proverbs 3:5-6:

"Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."

Beautiful words. Powerful words. They tell us to trust. To lean not on our own understanding. To submit to Him. And He will guide us. He will make our paths straight.

We're going to talk about this trust. We're going to talk about God's wisdom versus our own understanding. We're going to talk about aligning our desires with God's plans.

But before we do that, let's pray.

Dear Heavenly Father,

We come before you today with open hearts. We ask for your wisdom. We ask for your guidance. Help us to trust in you, even when it's hard. Help us to lean not on our own understanding, but on your wisdom. Guide us in your ways, Lord. Make our paths straight. We ask this in your holy name. Amen.

Let's begin.

Understanding Trust in God

Trust is a simple word, but it carries a weighty meaning. It's about reliance, about faith, about letting go of control. When we talk about trust in God, we're talking about a wholehearted reliance on Him. It's about believing that He is who He says He is, and that He will do what He says He will do. It's about letting go of our own understanding, our own plans, our own control, and submitting to His will.

This is not always easy: In fact, it's often very hard. We like to be in control. We like to understand. We like to plan. But God's ways are not our ways. His thoughts are not our thoughts. And so, we're called to trust in Him, to lean not on our own understanding, but on His.

There's a beauty in this trust: There's a freedom. When we trust in God, we're free from the burden of trying to figure everything out on our own. We're free from the stress and worry that comes with trying to control everything. We're free to rest in His love, His wisdom, His plans.

Trust is not just about freedom: It's also about growth. When we trust in God, we grow in our relationship with Him. We grow in our understanding of His character. We grow in our faith. Trust is not a stagnant thing. It's a dynamic, growing, deepening relationship with God.

This Scripture is a call to trust: It's a call to submit. It's a call to let go of our own understanding and to rely on God's. But it's also a promise. It's a promise that when we trust in God, when we submit to Him, He will make our paths straight. He will guide us. He will lead us. No matter what we're going through, no matter how difficult or confusing or painful it may be, we can trust in God. We can rely on Him. We can submit to Him. And He will guide us. He will make our paths straight.

How do we trust in God?: How do we lean not on our own understanding? How do we submit to Him? It starts with a decision. A decision to trust. A decision to let go of control. A decision to rely on God. It's a decision that we make every day, in every situation, in every moment.

It's also a relationship: Trusting in God is about developing a deep, personal relationship with Him. It's about spending time with Him, talking to Him, listening to Him. It's about getting to know Him, getting to know His character, getting to know His promises. Trust is not just a feeling. It's not just a belief. It's something we do. It's something we live out. It's something we demonstrate through our actions, through our decisions, through our words.
