"TROUBLED RELATIONSHIPS"

I Samuel 18:5-30, 18:29*

ETS: David & Saul had a troubled relationship.

ESS: Most, if not all of us, have experienced some troubled relationship.

There are many people who spend a great deal of their time and life tearing down relationships rather than building them. This may be without consideration of the results of their actions; however, there are serious consequences.

1. What provokes troubled relationships?

2. What is produced by troubled relationships?

3. What prevents troubled relationships?

I. Their PROVOCATION (what incites or stimulates troubled relations?)

Six things that are detrimental to relationships:

A. Jealousy (18:5, 8-9) Why? insecurity "the Kingdom?"

"jealousy is cruel as the grave" Song of Solomon 8:6

Why was he insecure and jealous? I Samuel 16:14

B. Selfishness (18:8) head strong determination

C. Repugnant attitude (18:10) (Offensive, rude & obnoxious)

D. Dupes (18:22-23) (those who are gullible - a person who easily or unwittingly serves the cause of another person.)

E. Gossips (18:24) Troublemakers

A perverse (froward) man soweth strife, and a whisperer separateth chief friends" Prov. 16:28

"Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out; so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth." Prov. 26:20

F. Insubordination (lack of respect for authority or another’s position)

1. To God’s commands (Eph. 5:21) when there is a legitimate difference and the problem(s) are not resolved by either party.

If it be possible, "As much as is within you live peaceably with all men"

2. to person’s position (Romans 12:10, I Sam. 24:6

II. Their PRODUCTION

the worst case scenario is domestic violence

A. Broken Fellowship (his father-in-law) destroying something whole -that which could be.

1. with God (Matt. 5:21-24

2. with others - its contagious, for reaching results

B. Burden Hearts (20:1, 3 - Prov. 26:20-22)

C. Bitter Spirits (Prov. 18:19, Heb. 12:14-15, I Sam. 18:29, 23:14,-

22:12-19) (priests killed) (31:4) suicide eventually.

(19:1, 19:10, 11, 15) to kill David - chasing fleas (24:12-14)

It controlled his life.

D. Blind Hypocrisy (20:25) ff

III. Their PREVENTION

You can’t prevent them from taking place but you can prevent them from effecting you personally.
