Summary: During the great tribulation period the bottomless pit will be opened and people will be tormented five months by the demons set free.

Torment from the Abyss

Revelation 9:1-12

In chapter we saw the affects of the sounding of the first four trumpets. A third of everything concerning the mass of the earth and the solar system was affected. But yet in the last verse a warning is cried out by an angel concerning the last three trumpets.

Chapter 8:13 Woe, woe, woe, to the inhibiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound.

See: Chapter 9:1

1. A Fallen Star

This is not to be confused with the stars we have previously seen in chapter 6:13, and chapter 8:10.

The key words that tells us this star is not literal but a person is “and to him”

Who is this star?

See: Rev. 1:20 The seven stars the Lord has in His right hand are the angels (messengers) of the seven churches. This is certainly not this star in Rev. 9

Also: Rev. 22:16 Jesus is referred to the bright and morning star, but this star does not appear to be Jesus because it is fallen.

Fall: Greek work pipto-peto which means fallen as a lightning

See: Isaiah 14:12 this refers to the fall of Satan

And: Luke 10:18 Jesus says He beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven

Vs.9 “The key to the bottomless pit was given unto him”

See: Vs.11 The king over the bottomless pit is referred to as Abaddon in the Hebrew and Apollyon in the Greek which means destroyer another name for Satan.

Mention: John 10:10 The referring to Satan is come to steal, kill and destroy.

Point: Bottomless Pit = Abyss is not to be confused with hell

Rev. 20:1-3 Satan is bound in the bottomless pit for a thousand years

2. The Sting Of Scorpions

See: Rev. 9:2-5, 7-10 Out of the bottomless pit come these creatures described to be the looks of locusts which have faces as men, hair or women, the teeth of lions and the tail and sting of scorpions.

See: Luke 8:30-31 We find here these devils (demons) pleading with the Lord not to be commanded into the deep (abyss or bottomless pit).

The creatures from the bottomless pit are obviously demons following their leader Satan.

See: Joel 1:4-6 a similar description given here by the prophets Joel except the creatures in Rev. 9 did not hurt the vegetation.

See also: Joel 2:4-6 Also a similar description of Rev. 9

Rev. 9:4 they will sting all men except the 144,000 which have the seal of God in their foreheads

I have never been stung by a scorpion but I have been told it is lasting sting of intense pain.

According to Vs.5, 10 the sting of these creatures will last for five months without interruption of pain.

Point: there will be no pain relief remedy to take away that pain

3. The Sustainer Of Life

See: Vs.5-6 In those days men shall seek death and shall not find it

“And death shall flee from them”

Mention: Jeremiah 8:3 Jeremiah writes about a time when death shall be chosen rather than life by remaining people of an evil family.

Also: Job 7:15 Job in all his sufferings thought it would better to just die

There will be those who will attempt suicide but it will flee from them!

God Himself will put physical death on hold!

Mention: Psalms 103 tells us all things are created by God and unto all things He gives the breath of life.

Also: Job 14:5 God has our bounds for life and we cannot go pass them

When it comes to Spiritual life we are all given a choice to chose or reject it!

This spiritual life is given by God through His Son!

See: John 3:16-19 One can chose Jesus the Christ and have life everlasting or continue in their love for darkness (sin) under the condemnation of God.
